An excellent piece on Bordeaux pirate radio in the 80s, where I'm now currently based. The last line could apply to Dublin too. 'If the utopians of free radio did not keep all their promises, they will at least have allowed the upheaval of a confined situation and the achievement of real radio pluralism'

How different it was when the golden pirate radio era flourished in Ireland. Radio Sligo was a pirate station & Ray McSharry would be appointed Tainiste and Minister for Finance after the election. The power of pirate radio was at its height in the 80s.

Why does local radio exist in Ireland today? Many say to replace the pirates of the 70s & 80s but it goes back further. The state broadcaster RTÉ couldn't accommodate all needs in Ireland. From loudspeakers & RTÉ vans to homemade bedroom pirates, the need was there & satisfied
