The Heritage Office and the Archives Service are proud to be working with Melanie McQuade, Heritage Officer in Westmeath County Council, on this project. Adrian Roche of The History Trail has almost completed ten interviews with people in, or from, both counties with links to Argentina. We have also been able to digitise some really important photographs and other archives that people have lent us. If you have a story to tell, or some family archives to share, please contact [email protected] or [email protected].

🎥We are pleased to share this recording of the Heritage Week Talk delivered by Adrian Roche of the History Trail in Mullingar Library Westmeath Libraries
Adrian's talk looks at the history Irish emigration to Argentina from the 19th century and he discusses his work on the Argentine Emigration Oral History Project. This project is recording interviews with people who have generational memories of emigration from Westmeath and Longford to Argentina, of the life experienced in Argentina and of return journeys back and forth between the two countries.
The project is an Action of the Westmeath Heritage Plan funded by The Heritage Councilwith support from Westmeath County Council and Longford County Council Longford Westmeath Argentina Society are key partners on this project.

From the Archives
This is the only known photograph of Ardandra Castle, near Legan. The home of a significant branch of the O'Farrell family, it was a tower house, constructed in the late medieval or early modern period. John Ferrall of Ardandra had a Catholic church built at Lady Well, Legan, in 1730. The commemorative stone can still be seen beside the well there. The church was the predecessor of St Mary's, the present parish church. Laurence Farrell of Ardandra served in Berwick's Regiment in France in the 1750s. It is not known when the Farrells left Ardandra, but it was likely in the second half of the 18th century. The castle was later owned by the Shaw family and, after them, the Brady family. It was demolished c. 1906.
