The business community of Loughrea has lost one of its most cherished and respected figures with the sudden passing of Gerard Dervan on Friday, 25th July. Gerard, a devoted husband, father, and proud Loughrea native, died unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and deep love for his community.
For many years, Gerard, alongside his beloved wife Mary and their family, ran the highly successful Dervan’s Fashions Store in the heart of Loughrea. More than just a retailer, Gerard was a passionate advocate for the vitality and vibrancy of the town’s retail life. He believed in Loughrea – in its people, its businesses, and its potential – and he lived that belief every single day.
In our retail community, Gerard led by quiet example – always unassuming, yet profoundly influential. A natural mentor and thoughtful innovator, he generously shared his wealth of experience with others in the business community, helping to foster a spirit of collaboration and resilience that will long endure. A tireless champion for Loughrea, he believed deeply in the strength of community. His gentle manner, coupled with a deeply held belief in positivity and constructive dialogue, made him a trusted voice and a valued friend to many of us in the retail family of Loughrea.
Gerard’s passing is a profound loss to the town he helped to shape, but his memory will remain an inspiration to all within Loughrea’s retail community. He will be sorely missed by his many friends in the retail community of Loughrea, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Gerard, may you rest in peace. Our deepest sympathies go to Mary and all the Dervan family at this difficult time.
