“Reflexology can reduce patients’ anxiety before undergoing surgery”,

A scientific study conducted at Haifa’s Bnei Zion Medical Center showed that reflexology significantly reduces patient anxiety before surgery.

A clinical trial led by Dr. Shmuel Attias and published in Frontiers in Medicine ( 12 September 2025) evaluated 300 patients undergoing elective laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery.

Patients were divided into three groups: standard care alone, standard care plus reflexology, and standard care plus a “sham” reflexology-like touch control to account for the soothing effect of simple human attention.

Patients receiving actual reflexology experienced a statistically significant drop in anxiety upon entering the operating room compared to both control groups.

While the average anxiety reduction across all participants was 0.8 points on a 0–10 scale, the effect was even more pronounced—a 1.3-point drop—among the 75% of patients who started with moderate-to-high anxiety levels.

The researchers, including department head Prof. Elad Schiff, emphasized that reflexology offers a safe, simple, non-invasive tool to improve patient well-being without the side effects or recovery complications associated with anti-anxiety medications.

The Complementary-Medicine Division at Bnei Zion Medical Center provides these evidence-based treatments free of charge to hospitalized patients, including those in the obstetrics and hematology departments.
