🕊️ Something remarkable happened in County Mayo last week.

Over 13,000 pilgrims made their way to Knock Shrine for the 41st All-Ireland Rosary Rally, making it the biggest Catholic gathering in Ireland since Pope Francis visited back in 2018. Last year's 40th anniversary broke the 10,000 mark for the first time in recent memory. This year added another 3,000. Nobody quite saw that coming.

There were prayers, confessions, healings, and a rosary handcrafted in Bethlehem distributed to attendees. There were buses from every corner of the island and voices from as far as Nigeria. And there was that unmistakable feeling you only get in the west of Ireland that this place has been drawing people for a reason for a very long time.

The 2026 Irish Open is heading to Doonbeg September 10 to 13 at Trump International Golf Links, and if that wasn't enough excitement for one county, the Walker Cup is at Lahinch the week before. Two world-class golf events, back to back, right on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Oh, and there's the small matter of whether the President of the United States might pop along for a round.

Will he come? Won't he? The Taoiseach has the kettle on. The ambassador called it a "potential possibility." The resort is quietly planning for everything. Clare, meanwhile, is just getting on with it because, honestly, the golf, the coastline, Doughmore Beach, Kilkee, the Cliffs of Moher... it sells itself, presidential visit or not. 🌊

🎵 Imagine retiring to a tiny island off the coast of Mayo...

Well, John Lennon didn't just imagine it; he actually bought one. Dorinish Island in Clew Bay cost him £1,700 in 1967, locals nicknamed it "Beatle Island," and he once said his dream was to grow old there with Yoko. Planning permission was granted. He was looking into renewing it before he died.

Life and New York got in the way. But the island is still out there, sitting quietly in one of Ireland's most beautiful bays, surrounded by over 365 islands and the kind of scenery that makes you completely understand why a Beatle fell for Mayo.

Yoko later sold the island and donated the proceeds to a Dublin children's hospital. Even the ending is very Irish.

Did you know Dublin Castle just knocked Kilkenny Castle off the top spot as Ireland's most-visited heritage site? 🏰

In 2024, Dublin Castle welcomed over 727,000 visitors, a massive leap that nobody really saw coming. But that's the thing about Ireland's heritage scene right now: it's full of surprises. Céide Fields in Mayo saw a 38% jump in visitors after opening a new centre. Donegal Castle is up 15%. And Dún Aonghasa on Inis Mór? Stubbornly, wonderfully consistent because some places just don't need to compete.

Whether you're a history lover, a Sunday explorer, or someone who just fancies a decent castle with a good story attached, Ireland is delivering.

And here's a tip worth bookmarking 📌: the OPW's Free Wednesday programme offers free admission to many heritage sites on the first Wednesday of every month. Donegal Castle, Glendalough, Ross Castle, Cahir Castle, and more. First come, first served, so get there early!

Planning a trip to Ireland this summer? Here's something worth knowing before you fly! 🍀✈️

Ryanair has issued an important heads-up about the EU's new Entry/Exit System, and if your holiday includes a stop through a European airport like Málaga, Paris, or Madrid, you could be looking at some seriously long queues. We're talking fingerprints, facial scans, and waits of up to three hours at some checkpoints. Not exactly the relaxing start to a holiday anyone has in mind!

The good news? Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area, so if you're flying directly into Dublin, Cork, or Shannon, you won't be caught up in the EES chaos at this end. 🙌

But if you're combining the Emerald Isle with a spin around Europe, and sure, why wouldn't you, it's worth giving yourself extra airport time on those Schengen legs of the journey.
