“One stormy evening, a huge gust of wind gathered itselfup over the bitter sea, rushed across the rocky plain, and threw itself fiercely at the misty mountain. Nell, sitting in her usual spot, watched as the filthy fumes shifted and the mountain was
finally revealed to her. Nell’s head was filled with all the colours in the paintbox as the most dazzling light she had ever seen poured through her grimy window. It was golden and warm, peachy, and calm, and it was the most wonderful thing she had
ever seen. Just as quickly as it had happened, the wind dropped, the fumes returned, and the mountain was hidden once more, but Nell was already busy painting, trying to capture the beauty she had seen, so she could remember it always.”

“George’s Grandad Danny told him once that he felt like the richest person alive when he was outside. ‘Richer than a king?’ asked George, a little confused because he knew his Grandad’s house was small, his car was old, and he didn’t wear fancy clothes or big hats. ‘Richer than any king, Georgie boy,’ he replied, smiling. ‘When I’m outside, I have everything I’ve ever dreamed of.’ ‘Really?’ said George, his bright eyes growing wider as he imagined all the shiny, fast, and expensive things kings must have. ‘Like what?’ he said, filled with excitement. ‘Well,’ said Grandad. ‘It takes a very special person to find the riches I’m talking about, but when they do, they will have them forever.’”

Thank you News Mag Media for featuring in your magazine!

'E.R. Murray’s gripping plot draws the reader straight into Greytown and the missing pet mystery within the first couple of pages. She has created a hugely likeable and refreshing character in Arabella Pepper, who isn’t afraid to be herself, even when she doesn’t quite fit in. The plot is pacey and captivating from the outset, allowing the reader to feel as though they too are a Wild Detective alongside Arabella.'

'A little beak emerged, sharp and bright. Two little eyes gazed up at Jack. The bird shook itself, and the shell fell away. Jack sat back on his heels, astonished. Then he frowned. This was no place for birds! he thought and decided he would wait for the mother to return, and then he would be rid of it. He opened the window to the blue sky and waited all day and all night, but the mother never came. The chick cried with hunger. Jack dropped water into its hungry beak and went outside to fetch a few bugs. Tomorrow, he thought, tomorrow her mother will come.

In the morning, he woke to the chick’s hungry cries. An orange throat looked up at him. The chick shivered.

She’s cold! Jack thought. He took the tea cosy and wrapped the tiny creature in it. He looked up at the window. Where was the tiny chick’s mother? When would she come?’

‘I could be forgiven for anthropomorphism if I said that Northern Ireland’s last choughs did not seem to exhibit the joyful, carefree behaviour of the Tory birds. The fact that choughs have held on in Tory and Rathlin, after disappearing from most of Ireland, illustrates an interesting aspect of island ecology. Because an island is effectively its own little ecosystem, cut off to a certain extent from what is happening on the mainland, it can act as a refuge for a species that is under pressure in other places. Tory holds another example of this phenomenon: after saying goodbye to the choughs, as we walked along the road on the edge of the village, another strange call started up, and continued persistently. It was a corncrake in a field right beside the road, giving its mechanical, two-note buzz of a call that was once heard throughout the Irish countryside. Another victim of agricultural intensification, the corncrake underwent a massive decline in population in the 20th century. Tory is now one of the only places where its voice is still commonplace. As we sat down on a wall to listen to it, a couple of women came down the road. “Have you heard the corncrake yet?” I asked, thinking the women were also visitors from the ferry. “Yes,” said the first woman cheerfully, in an accent that said she was from the island or nearby. “Those birds never shut up.” They went on without stopping. If I had known they were from the area, I would have greeted them in Irish. For Tory is a redoubt not only for threatened birds and Fomorians, but also the Irish language. According to the 2022 Census, Tory has the highest proportion of Irish speakers of all the Gaeltacht Planning Areas, with 69% of the island’s population using Irish every day outside of the education system.’

'The overall story and theme of this book is incredible and the illustrations are stunningly intricate, earthy, and full of wonder. And the presence of a mysterious creature observing from the hedges adds layers of magic and reflection to what is an already beautiful story. This is an author I hope to follow for a long time.'

‘It is not fanciful to see certain similarities between ravens and humans. In fact, such a comparison has driven much of the research into the workings of the corvid mind. If we are to understand our own minds, we must be able to make comparisons and contrasts, not only with our own ape relatives but also with animals more distantly related to us. In their 2004 review article, The Mentality of Crows, Nathan Emery and Nicola Clayton describe this as an example of convergent evolution, two species evolving similar adaptations to meet the same challenges. They see corvids and apes as possessing a similar mental “toolkit” comprising four main components: causal reasoning, flexibility, imagination, and prospection (the ability to think about the future). Interestingly, they argue that is the animals’ minds themselves, and not their brains, that have evolved convergently. Like ours, the corvid brain is large in comparison with the body, but its actual structure is quite different.’

'Arabella Pepper is an absolute triumph! This page-turner will have you hooked from beginning to end. Murray’s plot and character development are masterful, as are Monika Pollak’s illustrations. Monika’s drawings are stunning and complement the story no end. The evidence boards at the beginning of the chapters greatly add to the detective feel of the story. I particularly enjoyed the code system developed between Arabella and her team of detectives. I feel like this is only the beginning for Arabella and her pet crow Blue. For fans of mystery series, this is a must-read.'
