Matthew's friendship bench, a place to sit and chat, brings joy to
St Michael's House…
SKERRIES Mens shed has gifted a brand new bench to St Michael’s House this month in the name of Matthew Rock. Matthew graduated from the school in May and is now in Prosper Fingal. St Michaels House was a big part of Matthew’s life for all of his childhood and he was very happy there.
His mother Sara Rock told Skerries News: “I wanted to leave something belonging to Matthew here. It’s in keeping with his personality. Matthew always was known for his empathy and his ability to chat to other kids. If there were kids who wouldn’t come out of the playground he could get them to come in. The idea of having a bench in his name here just seemed perfect.”
Sara approached Paul Kelly of the Skerries Men’s Shed with the idea and he agreed to take on the project with Ciaran O’Reilly. Ciaran recalls: “It was the two of us, but mostly Paul. It was a real work of love of Paul’s.”

New entrance layout sparks anger in Downside Heights

Residents of Downside Heights say new works at their estate entrance have turned a once-manageable junction into a daily hazard. From near-misses to confusion over the design, locals are now calling for urgent action – and for someone in authority to come out and see it for themselves…

THE residents of Downside Heights are extremely upset about the works currently going on at the entrance to their estate.
Carmel Martin called Skerries News on December 1 to highlight the problem. “It’s a carnage,” she says. “We have a situation where if a car stops on the hill to let a car out of the estate, if there is a car behind the stopped car they can’t see why it has stopped, so some people have tried to overtake. They could go right into the car exiting the estate.
"My neighbour saw this happen the other day. A car tried to overtake the stopped car when she was pulling out and almost went into her."
Skerries News arranged to drop up the following morning to meet Carmel on site. On arrival, there was a huge crowd of unhappy residents waiting at the entrance to express their dissatisfaction with the work. The entrance which used to be very wide is now approximately one third the width, with new paths and grass going in on both sides....
