In AVA's early years, we were tasked with providing the lectern and sound system for the official opening of Rockwood Parade in 1993. What was once a construction site along the riverbank has since become one of Sligo's most recognisable streets.

Rockwood Parade is now part of the Sligo City Public Realm Enhancement Project, a major upgrade that includes new granite paving planned for the riverside walkway, running through to 2027.

AVA is proud to have been on hand for that historic day.

This week's Throwback Thursday looks back to June 2013, when the Lough Erne Resort in Fermanagh welcomed the G8 Summit, convening world leaders including US President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

As international media gathered to cover proceedings, AVA Systems was appointed to deliver technical and communications infrastructure for the White House Press Corps, supporting leading broadcasters including NBC News, ABC News, Fox News, Bloomberg, and the BBC News, stationed at the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Sligo. Fastcom were our local broadband supplier for the event.

A project we sincerely appreciated being part of, and one that stands as a testament to the trust placed in our capabilities to deliver at the highest standard, on a global stage.

On Throwback Thursday we remember our work on the Jameson Irish Whiskey Global Broadcast from 2006 to 2019. AVA Systems provided the technical infrastructure underpinning the Jameson Global Broadcast, connecting St Patrick's Day celebrations at the Old Jameson Distillery in Dublin with audiences internationally. The broadcast evolved from ISDN-based connectivity to IP-based streaming solutions over this period.

Our engineering team established and maintained live connections with dozens of international radio stations, extending the broadcast to partner organisations in countries including Japan, India, Kenya, Canada, Argentina, and the United States. Partner stations such as Interfm897, Metro 95.1, The World Famous CFOX, and KLOS were among those involved.

The broadcast incorporated live performances from leading Irish musical artists, delivered via synchronised, multi-region live feeds encompassing music, interviews, and celebratory programming. Throughout its fourteen-year run, AVA Systems oversaw the full technical operation, ensuring the reliable delivery of this international celebration of Irish culture and hospitality to audiences across multiple continents. While technically challenging, we thoroughly enjoyed working with the Jameson team and the international broadcasters.

Last Sunday, 12th July, Sligo marked the National Day of Commemoration with a ceremony at City Hall. Local representatives, Óglaigh na hÉireann / Irish Defence Forces personnel, faith leaders and the community gathered together in remembrance, wreath-laying and the raising of the National Flag.

The day is observed annually on the Sunday nearest 11th July, marking the anniversary of the 1921 Truce that ended the War of Independence. It honours the men and women who gave their lives in past conflicts and in peacekeeping service abroad.

Ceremonies were also held in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Kilkenny. The national ceremony was held in Dublin at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, attended by the President, the Taoiseach and representatives from across Irish life.

In Sligo, AVA made sure every voice carried clearly, so the words spoken, the prayers offered, and the tributes paid reached everyone gathered.

A privilege to play our part in a day of such significance.

Sligo BID is seeking an organised, approachable and detail-oriented individual to undertake a town-wide accessibility mapping project. The successful applicant will visit businesses throughout Sligo Town to gather information on accessibility features and inclusive supports, creating a comprehensive database that will inform a future accessibility map for residents and visitors.

The completed project will celebrate businesses that have invested in accessibility and inclusivity while encouraging others to consider improvements. A particular focus will be placed on businesses operating within the Night-Time Economy (NTE), including pubs, restaurants, cafés, clubs, live music venues and event spaces.

30 years ago, back in 1996, AVA provided the audiovisual support for Mother Teresa’s historic visit to Sligo.

Working in partnership with BT and eir, AVA delivered live video and audio link, over ISDN, to
BBC Northern Ireland from Sligo Cathedral. This allowed the moving ceremony to be recorded with high quality picture and sound.

Over 2,000 well-wishers gathered as Mother Teresa received the Freedom of the Borough of Sligo.
A truly special occasion we were proud to be part of!
