Gerard Gorman, now in his mid-60s, was sent to the school as a boarder in 1970, largely to satisfy his father’s aspirations that if it was good enough for the local doctor’s kids, it was good enough for his.

What none of the family knew was that at the age of 11, going on 12 years old, Gerard was being subjected to a harrowing cycle of molestation and r**e in which a predatory pa******le priest, Fr Malachy Finnegan, hunted a child who blamed himself for assaults he could not comprehend or explain.

Gerard kept the abuse a secret for over 40 years, finally admitting to a counsellor what had happened. In 2022, he felt ready to tell his story in a memoir, So Young: The Taking of My Life By the Catholic Church, co-written by his brother Damian.

That story is now coming to the stage in a unique theatrical event called Boy, that somehow manages to be hopeful and full of light despite the darkness at the core of it.
