This old stable yard would have been a hive of activity back in the 1700s. Roundwood was a Quaker house, and the Quakers, interestingly, kept their stables close to the main house - not out of grandeur but practicality. Their homes were as much working places as living ones, shaped by a belief in modesty, purpose, and a close connection between daily life and labour.

“I am attaching some photographs from my 1971 album... They show a group of UCD students and graduates who, in 1970–72, spent weekends restoring Roundwood House under Brian Molloy’s supervision... Through the College Dublin Society we came to know Desmond and Mariga Guinness, who roped us into helping at 50 Mountjoy Square and later at Roundwood...

I particularly remember sanding and painting the Chinese Chippendale staircase - a painstaking job... Brian fed us well and sometimes let us dine with the Paying Guests, while we slept in the less-salubrious rooms if the restored ones were needed... My favourite was the green bedroom...

Brian taught us how to refurbish on a shoestring - creating en-suites without spoiling proportions, using mattress ticking on worn sofas, sourcing furniture at rural auctions, and choosing Georgian colours... My home in Oslo is still decorated in what I call Roundwoodian colours... The Hamiltons, the former owners, often dropped by to see our progress, and I think they approved...

Those were truly Halcyon days. We students were all in our 20s and had the whole of our lives ahead of us.”
