Remember that Einstein failed exams too… probably. Maybe. Don’t fact check that.

Over 65,000 students are receiving their Leaving Certificate results, with this year marking the start of a gradual rollback of grade inflation measures introduced during the pandemic.

Just over half of this year’s grades were artificially adjusted, down from two-thirds last year, as part of a phased return to pre-pandemic grading standards.

This year's results include new trends in subject choices, with increases in subjects like Music, Agricultural Science, and the introduction of Ukrainian as an exam subject under temporary protection provisions.

Electric car sales in Ireland are rising fast, with 17,075 new EVs licensed so far in 2025, up 34% compared to the same time last year. In July alone, there was a 64% jump in electric car registrations.

More drivers are also choosing plug-in hybrids, while petrol and diesel cars are falling out of favour. Experts say drivers are making the switch due to better choice, improved battery range, government incentives, and rising fuel costs. Overall, car sales are up as people look for more efficient and environmentally friendly ways to get around.

Storm Éowyn, which hit Ireland in January 2025 with record-breaking winds of 184km/h, has become the most expensive insurance event in the State’s history, with claims now surpassing €301 million.

A total of 33,678 claims were lodged, with homeowners accounting for two-thirds of the total, while business claims made up the bulk of the financial cost. The storm caused widespread damage and power outages, affecting over 800,000 properties and knocking out critical infrastructure across electricity, water, and telecoms.

Experts say the event exposed major weaknesses in Ireland’s emergency planning and resilience, particularly for vulnerable communities. While some have called for burying overhead power lines, experts argue this is not practical in rural areas.

The insurance industry has defended its role in helping thousands recover without relying solely on public funds, as climate experts warn that even more dangerous extreme weather (especially heatwaves) may lie ahead.

The Irish Film & Television Academy has picked Sanatorium, a Ukrainian-language documentary by Galway-born director Gar O’Rourke, as Ireland’s entry for Best International Feature at the 2026 Oscars.

Shot in a surreal wellness centre near war-torn Odesa, the film captures a quietly absurd world where residents chase healing, love, and laughter through bizarre therapies - like slathering themselves in black mud said to cure infertility. Produced by Dublin’s Venom Films and Ukraine’s 2332 Films, it’s already picking up awards, including Best Irish Feature Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh.

O’Rourke calls it a tribute to resilience and “the strength of the Ukrainian spirit,” while IFTA says the fly-on-the-wall doc is “intriguing and quietly powerful.” Sanatorium hits Irish cinemas on 5 September.

Gerry Adams has donated the €100,000 in defamation damages he received from the BBC to a range of causes, including Unicef for children in Gaza, local GAA clubs, the Irish language sector, a republican prisoner support group, and youth mental health projects in Belfast.

The payout followed a jury ruling in May that found the BBC had defamed the former Sinn Féin president in a 2016 Spotlight programme, which alleged he sanctioned the killing of former party official Denis Donaldson - an allegation Adams denied. The court also ruled the BBC had not acted in good faith or in a fair and reasonable way, and ordered it to cover Adams’ legal costs, which may run into millions. “We can confirm the BBC has now paid Gerry Adams 100,000 euros in damages as required by the court,” a BBC spokesperson said. Adams had pledged to donate any damages to “good causes.”

The team behind Cork’s beloved Izz Café have released their debut cookbook, Jibrin, named after the Palestinian hometown of owners Izz and Eman.

Packed with popular recipes from their award-winning restaurant on George’s Quay, the book has already earned high praise from food critics including John and Sally McKenna.

The McKennas hailed it as a “book of hope” and a celebration of Palestinian hospitality and resilience, especially poignant amid the ongoing war in Gaza. Described by its authors as a way to preserve their culture for future generations, Jibrin is available now via Blasta Books.

Sally Rooney could face arrest under the UK’s Terrorism Act after pledging to donate proceeds from her books and BBC adaptations to Palestine Action, a group recently listed as a terrorist organisation in the UK.

In a piece for The Irish Times, the Mayo-born author reaffirmed her support for the group, writing that she intends to use her earnings and public platform “to go on supporting Palestine Action and direct action against genocide in whatever way I can.”

Legal experts have warned that Rooney could be prosecuted not only for the donation itself, but also for expressing such views at events in the UK, citing the law’s “gross disproportionality.” No 10 stated that supporting a proscribed organisation is a criminal offence, while over 700 people have been arrested in relation to the group since its proscription in July.

The BBC, which previously adapted Rooney’s novels Normal People and Conversations with Friends, said it is not currently working with the author and that any payments made are a matter for her.

Falling asleep in the bathroom of a nightclub and waking up in a church would be hilarious

The former County Club nightclub in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath is set for a major transformation after planning permission was granted to turn it from a nightclub into a church.

The redevelopment includes converting the old nightclub area into a place of worship with a new mezzanine level, raising the roof, and altering the building’s windows and entrances. The existing bar and restaurant will remain but operate as a dry, community-focused restaurant with no alcohol served.

The site will also host weekly and weekend church services, with up to 250 attendees on Sundays. The restaurant will be open to the public during the week, and also host occasional private events.
