Shanaclune Equine Dentistry EQUINE DENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING Maintaining a healthy equine mouth is a must, especially in this day and age of "hard feeds". MANUAL TOOLS ONLY ARE USED.

No equine is too young or too old to have it's teeth checked and worked on when necessary. Advice is always given freely on any issue however small or seemingly insignificant. I explain everything that I do in easy to understand language and provide you with an Equine Dental Evaluation sheet to keep as a record of my visit and the work carried out. It also gives you an indication of further treatm

ent and when best to visit you next according to your equine's individual dental requirements. I work closely with a number of local veterinary practices so if sedation is required it is only a phone call or day or so away.

"I am often asked how do I know how a horse is going to react when getting it's teeth checked especially when the horse may be nervous or never had it's teeth done before.

It is all about OBSERVATION! 🔍🔍🧐🧐I am constantly checking the horses eyes (orange line) to see if it is relaxed or displaying fear/nervousness either by showing the whites of the eyes, ears flat to the head, snorting, pawing the ground or backing up etc.

I also maintain constant contact with the horse with my left hand. The purpose of this is twofold, it allows me to feel if it is relaxed or uptight by tension in the head etc and it also it allows the horse to know that I am relaxed while working on it because let's face it if I was to show signs of nerves or aggression then things can go wrong very quickly when dealing with a big animal such as a horse!" 🐴🐴🦷👍

Saturday Evening Part 2:"
This is full palpation of "Briar" IMMEDIATELY after completion of her dental check up.

End result is no reaction to pressure being applied to the cheeks as a result of removal of the sharp buccal points that were causing her to react in the previous video.

She is also displaying lower head carriage and a relaxed eye due to the elimination of pressure on the masseter muscle on both sides of the jaw! "THANK YOU" Clara O Neill for the camera work!"🐎🦷🐴👍

"Saturday Evening Part 1:
I met "Briar" for the first time last night. As soon as I walked into the stable, I could see that she was a slightly nervous horse due to her backward stance, wide eyes and quivering in the expectation of being touched.

As is the norm for me when dealing with a slightly nervous horse, I slowed all my movements down on approach to "Briar" and kept talking to her softly as I approached her.

Once I had gained her trust, I started the visual observation and palpation stage of the check up.

When only the lightest of pressure was applied along the 1st and 2nd molar arcades "Briar" was very reactive and uncomfortable due to the sharp points of the teeth pressing against the inner surfaces of the teeth.

These sharp points would affect her riding on both reins as there would be discomfort due to pressure coming from the cheek piece of the bridle as it pressed against the cheek.

Transitions from walk to trot to canter and gallop as well as jumping would also result in head misalignment, shaking and playing with the bit.

The feeding action and temperament of "Briar" would also have been affected."🐴🦷🐎
