That is a thoughtful question, and many believers have asked it at one time or another.
The short answer is: success and hardship are not always direct indicators of a person's relationship with God.
Consider these points:
1. God Gives Common Grace to Everyone
Jesus taught that God "makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good" (Matthew 5:45). Intelligence, opportunities, talent, discipline, and favorable circumstances can benefit both believers and unbelievers.
A person who never prays may still succeed in business because they work hard, plan wisely, and seize opportunities.
2. Success Is Not Always What It Appears To Be
We often see people's achievements but not their struggles, fears, broken relationships, loneliness, or inner battles.
Someone may have wealth but lack peace. Someone may have fame but lack joy. Someone may have influence but lack purpose.
God measures success differently from the world.
3. Prayer Is Not an Insurance Policy Against Problems
Prayer does not mean a believer will never face difficulties.
Many of God's servants faced severe trials:
Job lost almost everything before restoration.
Joseph was sold into slavery before becoming a ruler.
David was anointed king yet spent years running for his life.
Paul the Apostle endured imprisonment, beatings, and shipwrecks.
Their prayers did not remove every challenge, but God used those challenges to shape their destiny.
4. God Is More Interested in Character Than Comfort
Sometimes God allows difficulties because He is building patience, faith, humility, endurance, and dependence on Him.
A student may think an examination is punishment, but the teacher sees it as preparation.
5. The Story Is Not Finished Yet
Psalm 73 records how the psalmist struggled because the wicked seemed to prosper while the righteous suffered. But he later realized he was only looking at a temporary picture.
Many apparent victories are temporary, while God's rewards often have eternal value.
A Simple Way to Look at It
Some people have success without God. Some people have struggles with God. But the greatest blessing is to have God with you in both success and struggles.
The real question is not, "Who is having the easier life today?" but "Whose life is built on a foundation that will last?"
As believers, we do not pray merely to avoid problems; we pray to know God, receive His guidance, gain strength for life's battles, and fulfill His purpose.
"The presence of storms does not mean the absence of God. Sometimes the very people God loves deeply are the ones He prepares greatly." ππΎβ¨
