Well well well… this is starting to get interesting! A range of trusted forecast models continue to hint at the development of a protracted cold spell of weather, with perhaps Christmas Day being the coldest in the initial wave of colder air.

There’s even the whisper of snow across the hills and mountains of the east coast, but more on that in tomorrow’s update where we’ll delve into the upcoming cold spell, the risk of snow for some favoured spots and the potential duration of such a cold snap.

Councillor warns no shuttle bus for new Waterford Bridge is a "mistake"

An independent councillor has warned that removing a planned shuttle bus from Waterford’s sustainable transport bridge would be a serious mistake.

The issue was raised at Waterford City and County Council’s December plenary meeting.

Independent Councillor Joe Kelly said the shuttle bus was essential for managing traffic and improving access across the city.

Concerns Over Traffic and Connectivity
Cllr Kelly said the shuttle bus would ease congestion in the city centre.

He highlighted ongoing traffic problems and said the service would provide a practical alternative for commuters.

He also questioned the decision to remove the electric shuttle bus from the project.

The bridge was originally designed to include public transport access.

Cllr Kelly asked if the council had received any update from the National Transport Authority (NTA), adding that the council previously asked the NTA to review its decision.

Importance of the Shuttle Bus

The councillor said the bus would link the city centre and the new train station on the North Quays.

He argued that the service would reduce the need for people to walk across the bridge in poor weather.

He said removing the bus undermines the original purpose of the project.

Cllr Kelly described the decision as "short-sighted and damaging".

He added that the shuttle bus was a key selling point when plans for the bridge were announced.

He said its removal weakens the overall transport strategy.

Council Response Awaited
Responding to the issue, Director of Services Michael Quinn said discussions with the NTA had taken place.

However, he confirmed that the council has not yet received a formal report.

Mr Quinn said he expected the report by now.

He told councillors the council would share the findings once they arrive.

The future of the Waterford sustainable transport bridge shuttle bus remains unclear.
