Shanaclune Equine Dentistry EQUINE DENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING Maintaining a healthy equine mouth is a must, especially in this day and age of "hard feeds". MANUAL TOOLS ONLY ARE USED.

No equine is too young or too old to have it's teeth checked and worked on when necessary. Advice is always given freely on any issue however small or seemingly insignificant. I explain everything that I do in easy to understand language and provide you with an Equine Dental Evaluation sheet to keep as a record of my visit and the work carried out. It also gives you an indication of further treatm

ent and when best to visit you next according to your equine's individual dental requirements. I work closely with a number of local veterinary practices so if sedation is required it is only a phone call or day or so away.

"Sometimes in this job you think that you have heard all the back stories to a "rescue" case but that was most certainly not the case with "Cookie", indeed some people might find the following details disturbing.

"Cookie" was found in Dublin Port. He had been used to smuggle drugs into the country. This form of smuggling drugs by the insertion of drug packages into the bodies of donkeys, small ponies and even dogs is on the rise. It signals a new level of depravity in our society.

Thankfully, "Cookie" has now found a wonderful home with his new owner Orla.

When I saw "Cookie" this morning, Orla said that she was not sure how he would react to a dental check up.

In order for "Cookie" not to get stressed out I got down to his level, i.e I knelt down on the floor of the stable so that he would not feel overwhelmed.

I slowed the whole process down and he did not show one sign of distress. My often used mantra of "TIME & PATIENCE" truly paid off today!"🐴🐎🐎👍

"You may think that this is just one of those cute photos of a horse being nosey while I am writing up a chart.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

This was my last call this evening."Maggie" a 5 year old mare has only just recently been taken on by her new owner Erin.

My initial chat with Erin revealed that "Maggie" had actually bucked Erin off twice, one of those times being just after she had mounted her.

I said that this would be as a result of pressure being exerted on the back teeth on the top right of the mouth as Erin was taking hold of the reins.

I then said that "Maggie" was then probably going to react when I started to do palpation of the head.

"Maggie" didn't just react, she literally exploded on the spot. I had never seen such an acute reaction before.

The reaction was due to extremely sharp buccal points on the molars towards the rear of "Maggie's" mouth on both the left and right hand side.

There was also absolutely no lateral movement of the jaws as the masseter muscle (the main muscle used for chewing) on both sides off the mandible (lower jaw) was under a lot of strain.

I then said to Erin that I would work very slowly and gently on "Maggie" as she might be very protective of her mouth.

To cut a long story short, the dental check-up went perfectly without incident or reaction on "Maggie's" part.

Further palpation was carried out as we progressed with the check up and at the end, her head was dropping down directly to the floor because from initially being used as a means of diagnosing areas of discomfort it had now effectively turned into a massage!

From initially wanting to "go through" me, I was her new best friend!"😊👍🐎🐴🦷

"A lot of people think that as a horse gets into it's late 20's or 30s that they will constantly experience dental problems. You can't generalise things like that!
Meet "Blanda" who is 34 years young!

The photo of her incisor arcades shows correct alignment but most significantly all the teeth are still vertical (they are not splayed horizontally) due to excellent gum structure and condition. Her overall condition is testament to the care and attention of her owner Jo!"👍🐴🐎🦷

"Expired 103 incisor extracted in entirety from the wonderful character that is "Frodo".

And for anybody wondering how long it took for "Frodo" to feel comfortable enough to eat again following the extraction, he had his head buried in his bucket of feed 5 minutes later!

End result is one happy horse and one happy owner". 👍🐴🐎🦷

"Five years on and "Alfie" has proved everyone wrong.

The horse that refused to give up and now has a perfect mouth, is riding/jumping and eats properly!

THANK YOU Patricia Carey for being on this journey with me, one that has been my proudest achievement (I have many but this is number 1!)while working with horses!" 👍🦷🐎🐴
