CRY104FM Marks 30 Years Licensed – Video Interview Highlights

Community Radio Youghal (CRY104FM) celebrated a major milestone on Saturday, 27th September, with an open day to mark 30 years as a licensed station.

Founder Noel Cronin reflected on the journey from the station’s beginnings in 1979, when four locals “had a dream” to bring community radio to Youghal.

Visitors got a behind-the-scenes look at the studios, where Seán Healy highlighted the technical team’s work, upgraded equipment, and training opportunities for Transition Year students. Station Manager Yvonne Smith described the open day as “a lovely community event,” with locals dropping in for a chat, a cup of tea, and a chance to meet presenters.

Volunteers also shared their stories. Tommy Byrne recalled his nervous first broadcast, encouraged by colleagues, while Tom Whelan spoke of the teamwork behind CRY’s sports coverage. Jimmy Flanagan paid tribute to the late Nooche Kenefick, a broadcaster fondly remembered in the community.

The day underlined what many already know, CRY104FM is more than a radio station. It is a community hub, run by dedicated volunteers and staff, proud to serve Youghal and beyond.
