Every Monday after Pentecost, the Church celebrates the Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church. We honor the Blessed Mother as the loving mother of all the faithful, leading them to the heart of her Son and interceding for them.

The theological roots of this title go back to the early Church. The Fathers of the Church, holy and studious bishops of the first centuries, often spoke of Mary as the New Eve. Just as the Woman Eve was โ€œthe mother of all the livingโ€ (Gen. 3:20), the Woman Mary was mother of all those living in Christ. In Revelation 12:17, St. John says that this Womanโ€™s offspring are โ€œthose who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus.โ€

The popularity of the specific expression โ€œMother of the Churchโ€ grew especially in the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2018 Pope Francis added a feast day under this title for the Monday following the solemnity of Pentecost โ€“ considered the birthday of the Church.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraphs 964-965) teaches us,

Maryโ€™s role in the Church is inseparable from her union with Christ and flows directly from it. โ€œThis union of the mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from the time of Christโ€™s virginal conception up to his deathโ€; it is made manifest above all at the hour of his Passion:

Thus the Blessed Virgin advanced in her pilgrimage of faith, and faithfully persevered in her union with her Son unto the cross. There she stood, in keeping with the divine plan, enduring with her only begotten Son the intensity of his suffering, joining herself with his sacrifice in her motherโ€™s heart, and lovingly consenting to the immolation of this victim, born of her: to be given, by the same Christ Jesus dying on the cross, as a mother to his disciple, with these words: โ€œWoman, behold your son.โ€

After her Sonโ€™s Ascension, Mary โ€œaided the beginnings of the Church by her prayers.โ€ In her association with the apostles and several women, โ€œwe also see Mary by her prayers imploring the gift of the Spirit, who had already overshadowed her in the Annunciation.โ€

Also, Pope St. Paul VI, in โ€œCredo of the People of God,โ€ said the following:

Joined by a close and indissoluble bond to the Mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption, the Blessed Virgin, the Immaculate, was at the end of her earthly life raised body and soul to heavenly glory and likened to her risen Son in anticipation of the future lot of all the just; and we believe that the Blessed Mother of God, the New Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven her maternal role with regard to Christโ€™s members, cooperating with the birth and growth of divine life in the souls of the redeemed.

Ten days after Jesus ascended into Heaven, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost (Acts 2:1โ€“41).

The Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of our Lord Jesusโ€™ promise when He said, โ€œAnd behold, I am with you always, until the end of the ageโ€ (Matthew 28:20).

Through the Holy Spirit, Christ remains present with His Churchโ€”guiding, sanctifying, and strengthening us in faith. The same Spirit who empowered the Apostles to preach the Gospel with courage continues to work in us today, calling us to live as witnesses of Christ in the world.

St. Bernardine of Siena was ordained a Franciscan priest at the age of 24 in the year 1402. He took upon himself the poverty of the Franciscan Order and expressed an acute awareness of the needs of people of his time. He was known for his personal holiness and his seemingly endless energy and joyful vitality.

St. Bernardine saw clearly the paganism that had taken root once more in Italy, leading people astray. With great devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, he devised a monogram for the Holy Name of Jesus: IHS, written in Gothic script and emblazoned on a sun. These are the capital Greek letters: iota, eta, and sigma. They are the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek, which is ฮ™ฮ—ฮฃฮŸฮŽฮฃ. Like other graphics that represent the name of Jesus or Christ, this is called a Christogram.

The Christogram was placed on a sun because there had been a resurgence in 15th-century Italy of sun worship. Byzantine Greeks had brought copies of the fourth-century Hymn to the Sun by Julian the Apostate, for example. The cult of Apollo needed to be replaced by the true and authentic worship of Jesus Christ, who alone is the sun that rises in the East and who is the only Son of the Father.

St. Bernardine would exhibit this monogram devoutly at the end of his sermons to those listening. He also encouraged the faithful to place the monogram on their doorposts. At the time, there was deep political division between two groups: the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. St. Bernardine urged people to adopt the IHS rather than the banners of these two groups.

The IHS is therefore a symbol of peace, orthodoxy, fidelity to the Lord, and a powerful symbol to cling to Jesus and adore His Holy Name. The IHS would later be adopted by St. Ignatius of Loyola as the symbol for the Society of Jesus. Thus, the symbol has persisted from the time of the early Church to now.

The Ascension does not point to Jesusโ€™ absence but tells us that He is alive in our midst in a new way. He is no longer in a specific place in the world as He was before the Ascension. He is now in the lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each one of us. In our life we are never alone: we have this Advocate who awaits us, who defends us. We are never alone: the Crucified and Risen Lord guides us. We have with us a multitude of brothers and sisters who, in silence and concealment, in their family life and at work, in their problems and hardships, in their joys and hopes, live faith daily and together with us bring the world the lordship of Godโ€™s love, in the Risen Jesus Christ, ascended into Heaven, our own Advocate who pleads for us (Pope Francis).

St. Isidore the Farmer (1070-1130) is considered the patron saint of farmers and rural communities. Isidore was born in Madrid; as a young boy, he went to work on the estate of John de Vergas, a wealthy landowner from the nearby town of Torrelaguanna.

Isidore labored on Johnโ€™s farm for the remainder of his life. He was a model worker, a simple and caring person, and a very devout Christian. Every day he rose early in the morning to attend Mass at a nearby church, sometimes, according to fellow workers, showing up late for work because he spent too much time in prayer.

Isidore married Maria de la Cabeza, a simple and devout woman who herself became a canonized saint. The couple had one child, who died at an early age. They were both known for their piety and concern for the poor; legends exist about Isidore miraculously supplying them with food on occasion, and the saint had a great concern that animals be treated properly. Isidore would pray while plowing in the fields, and itโ€™s even said that angels would sometimes help him with his work.

St. Isidore the Farmer died in 1130. Along with Saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, and Philip Neri, he is known in Spain as one of the โ€œFive Saints.โ€

Let us pray!

Grant, O Lord, that through the intercession of Saint Isidore, the farmer, we may follow his example of patience and humility, and so walk faithfully in his footsteps so that, in the evening of life, we may be able to present to You an abundant harvest of good fruits, You who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

If you were running for election, why should they elect you?

The Apostles faced the same questions. After Jesus returned to his Father in heaven, St. Peter spoke to a gathering of about 120 of Jesusโ€™ disciples. He said they needed to elect an Apostle to replace Judas, who had betrayed the Lord.

Peter pointed out two qualifications that were necessary. First, the new Apostle must be someone who had been a follower of Jesus from his Baptism to his Ascension. Second, it had to be someone who had witnessed Christโ€™s Resurrection. The choice came down to two men: Joseph, who was sometimes called โ€œJoseph the Just,โ€ and Matthias. Both men were qualified, so the disciples drew lots. This means that they made their decision by drawing or pulling a marked piece of straw or cloth from a bundle. Matthias was the winner.

It was important for there to be 12 Apostles because Jesus had called 12 men to this special ministry. The Apostles wanted to show their respect for the Lordโ€™s choice of 12 special followers.

We believe that Matthias immediately joined in the work of the Apostlesโ€”spreading the Good News about Jesusโ€™ life, Death, and Resurrection and baptizing converts in his name. However, we do not know for certain where he preached or how he died. Tradition tells us that he became a missionary in foreign lands and that, like so many of the other Apostles, he died as martyr for his love of the Lord.

We honor Matthias as a saint and celebrate his feast day on May 14. Matthias was an eyewitness to all that Jesus did. He followed the Lord from the Jordan River, where he was baptized, to Calvary, to the empty tomb, and to the mountain top in Galilee where Jesus was taken up into the heavens. He cast his lot with Jesus from the very beginning. Like Matthias, we can choose to follow Jesus everyday.

Let us pray!

O glorious St. Matthias โ€ฆ you were selected by the twofold sign of the uprightness of your life and the call of the Holy Spirit. Obtain for us the grace to practice the same uprightness of life and to be called by that same Spirit to wholehearted service of the Church. Amen.
