Kurdistan: A History of Defying Empires ☀️

The roots of Kurdish resilience run far deeper than modern politics—they are forged in a millennium of survival against imperial expansion. Long before modern borders were drawn by Western powers, the Kurdish people possessed a rich, ancient cultural and spiritual diversity deeply rooted in Zoroastrianism, Yazidism, Christianity, and indigenous faiths.

However, early Islamic expansions and subsequent regional empires routinely viewed this indigenous culture and its diverse faiths as theological and political threats to centralized rule. For centuries, this hostile stance fueled systemic persecution, the destruction of sacred ancient shrines, and a continuous campaign of cultural erasure designed to dismantle the very core of original Kurdish identity.

Crucially, this oppression was also financial: non-Muslim populations within the Kurdish regions were subjected to heavy, discriminatory taxes (such as jizya and kharaj) designed to drain local wealth, enforce second-class citizenship, and pressure communities into forced assimilation. This economic subjugation is a painful historical reality that the Kurdish people endured under various imperial caliphates and Ottoman rule.

Today, Kurdistan stands as a testament to endurance. Having survived centuries of imperialist aggression, financial exploitation, and systematic attempts to erase their indigenous identity in their own homeland, the Kurdish people continue to defend their cultural survival and strive toward a safer, self-determined, and democratic future.❤️☀️💚

Today, August 3rd, we mark the solemn anniversary of the Shingal Genocide—a dark day when ISIS unleashed a brutal campaign of extermination against the Yezidi.

The Yezidi represent one of the oldest, most resilient roots of Kurdish history and culture. When Shingal was left defenseless in 2014, brave Kurdish freedom fighters rushed to the frontlines to break the siege of Mount Sinjar. By sacrificing their own lives, they opened a heroic humanitarian corridor that saved over 100,000 stranded civilians from starvation and slaughter.

It was the courageous Kurdish women warriors who led the fight to crush the Islamists/ISIS who systematically enslaved and abused Yezidi women and girls.

Today, we mourn the thousands of innocent lives lost and honor the historic Kurdish resistance. The safety, autonomy, and future of Shingal will always remain an inseparable part of the Kurdish struggle for freedom, democracy, and human dignity.
