What does it mean to visualize a history that was almost never documented on screen?

For the 2025 Dan David Prize, we had the honor of creating the film about archaeologist and historian Dr. Bar Kribus, whose work focuses on Late Antique to Early Modern Ethiopia and the history and material culture of Betä Ǝsra’el (Ethiopian Jews).

Together with animator Oren Hen, we used animation to bring to life landscapes, objects and communities that are often missing from the visual record. This is exactly where museums, archives and animated storytelling meet: they make space for histories that were always
there – just rarely seen.

What does it mean to tell history – and who usually gets left outside the frame?

This is at the heart of the work of filmmaker and artist Fred Kudjo Kuwornu, founder of Do The Right Films and one of the 2025 Dan David Prize winners. His films explore Black representation, identity, and “forgotten” histories – including “We Were Here: The Untold History of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe.”
Creating this animated portrait with the Dan David team felt like stepping inside his mission: to rewrite who is visible in our shared past.
And honestly? I’ll say it out loud – I truly hope his powerful film will go all the way to the Oscars. The story – and the way he tells it – absolutely deserves that stage.

אחד האהובים עלי. גם בגלל הנושא הסופר מענין - תארו לכם שהאירופאים החליטו בחוצפתם שבאפריקה לא ידעו לעבוד עם זכוכית לפני שפגשו אותם ושזה לגמרי מופרך ולא נכון? וגם בגלל שמצאתי את עצמי עובדת על משהו שהיה פנטזיה שלי שנים - אנימציה עם חרוזים.

Excited to share my new film series for the amazing history prize of D.David 2024 a project that fulfills my dream as a former historian: This isn’t just any documentary or explainer - it’s a celebration of the fusion of history and discovery! It was amazing to visually think the research these great minds have been working on for so long and deliver it to the whole world to see.

נטע הלפרין כתבה עלינו כתבה מהממת בהארץ! זה הראיון הכי מעמיק שהיה לנו, עם הכי הרבה סיפורי מאחורי הקלעים על פרויקט ״משפחה במילואים״.
(יש לינק לקניית הספר בתגובות ובביו שלי וגם לתמיכה בספר הבא!)

לעבוד על הספר הזה, כשאנחנו מקבצות סביבנו קהילה שהרגישה שהיא נותנת סיפורים שיקבלו מקום על הנייר, תורמת ניקוד ויעוץ מקצועי וחשיבה משותפת - באמת היתה חוויה מעצימה.
אישית אני כמובן מרגישה גם שקיבלתי מתנת יום הולדת מוקדמת עם הכתבה הזו… אז תודה רבה רבה לנטע והארץ..

עכשיו אנחנו עובדות עם עוד ״קהילה״ שלא באמת יכולה להתגבש. כי הם ״רק״ איבדו את הבתים שלהם וגרים במגורים לא ברורים שלא נועדו להכיל אותם לזמן בלתי ידוע. והחוויות של הילדים האלה הולכות להשאר איתם כל החיים. אתמול נתנו לילד שפונה מהצפון לקרוא את הטיוטא של הספר הבא שלנו ״משפחה בלי בית״ - הוא אישר שאנחנו בכיוון הנכון.
אם אתם שוקלים לעזור להוציא את הספר בשבילם - נשמח שתלכו על זה ותסייעו להוציא אותו לאור ולמסור אותו לילדים שפונו מהצפון והדרום כמתנת ״אנחנו איתכם״. אתם לא לבד.

כשסיפרנו להם שפגשנו ילדים שעלו לכיתה א׳ שלוש פעמים השנה, פורטפוליו התגייסו לעזור לנו לגייס את התקציב שאנחנו צריכות כדי
לכתוב ספר לילדי משפחות מפונות.

אני יודעת שנדמה לרובנו שזה כבר לא ענין. חלק גדול מאיתנו חזר לשגרת חייו פחות או יותר.
אבל זה לא נגמר להרבה מאד מאיתנו.
והלב שלי לפחות, יוצא אל מי שעדין לא יודעים אם ואיך ומתי יחזרו הביתה.
אני מאד אשמח אם תבחרו לעזור לנו לגייס את התקציב כדי לכתוב ולאייר ולהפיק ולתת להם ספר שיעזור להם לעבור את התקופה הזו בהרגשה שהם באמת לא לבד. לפעמים תשומת לב קטנה עושה את כל ההבדל.
