West Bengal has issued show-cause notices to 450+ B.Ed colleges after inspections flagged serious irregularities, including non-functional institutions and poor infrastructure.

With many students from Tripura and the Northeast pursuing B.Ed in West Bengal, one question now matters:

If a college faces de-affiliation, what happens to students already studying there or those who have already graduated?

No blanket cancellation of B.Ed degrees has been announced. But the uncertainty could have implications for future teacher recruitment and document verification.

A 20-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, known online as “Bittu Tabahi,” has received a job offer from Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of the Netherlands-based organisation The Ocean Cleanup, after his months-long solo effort to clean the polluted Ajnar River gained widespread attention.

Surendra Singh Choudhary, a BSc student from Biaora in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district, began cleaning the Ajnar River on January 26, Republic Day, after repeatedly being disturbed by the state of the water whenever he passed the river or visited a nearby temple. He has been removing plastic waste, algae and accumulated debris from the river on his own, without the backing of an official campaign or large team.

His work drew wider attention after an X user shared his cleanup efforts along with before-and-after pictures of the river. Industrialist Anand Mahindra had earlier described Choudhary as his “Monday Motivation,” while former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen called his work “heroic.” Choudhary also received recognition from Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who met him at his residence in Bhopal and praised him for taking responsibility for cleaning the river.

Reacting to the viral post about Choudhary’s work, Slat responded simply, “Come work for us.” The Ocean Cleanup is an organisation that develops technology to remove plastic pollution from oceans and rivers.

Whether the invitation turns into a formal opportunity remains to be seen, but the response reflects how far Choudhary’s individual effort has travelled beyond its original setting.

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan arrived in Assam on Saturday, September 6, for a two-day visit as part of a four-day tour of the Northeast covering Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh from September 6 to 9, according to the Vice President’s Secretariat.

Radhakrishnan landed at Guwahati’s Borjhar Airport around 10 am. On his first day, he attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Geetanagar College, formerly known as Kanya Mahavidyalaya, at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, recalling the institution’s legacy since its establishment in 1882. He also attended the convocation ceremony of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences at Jyoti-Bishnu Antorjalik Kala Mandir. He was later scheduled to attend a dinner hosted by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan.

On September 7, the Vice President is scheduled to attend a foundation stone-laying programme for development projects worth around Rs 110 crore, funded by the Assam government, at Gauhati University, followed by a civic reception and interaction with students, faculty and citizens at the university’s Convention Centre. During the programme, he is also expected to unveil a book authored by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma titled *Integrated Development (The Role of the North Eastern Council)*, along with a commemorative book marking the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika and an expanded edition of the Chandrakanta dictionary.

Following his engagements in Assam, Radhakrishnan will travel to Shillong on September 7, where he will attend a public reception and cultural programme at the Soso Tham Auditorium, featuring performances from the Khasi, Garo and Jaintia communities. He will subsequently continue his tour to Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, concluding on September 9 with a special session of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in Itanagar.

Ranjan Debnath, headmaster of PM SHRI Sabroom Girls Higher Secondary School in South Tripura, received the National Teachers’ Award 2026 from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony in New Delhi on Saturday, September 5, observed as Teachers’ Day.

Debnath is among 48 teachers selected from across the country for the award, representing 27 states, seven union territories and six central government organisations, with 26 male and 22 female teachers in this year’s list. According to reports, the selection process for 2026 was conducted through three stages — district, state and national — with candidates evaluated through a rigorous mechanism.

Debnath’s recognition highlights his contribution to academic performance, technology-driven learning, sports and the overall development of nearly 700 girl students at the Sabroom institution. The school recorded a 100% Madhyamik pass rate in 2024-25 and a 92% Higher Secondary pass rate, alongside expanded smart classrooms, robotics, VR, vocational education and sports facilities.

His career began as an assistant teacher at Maichhara Class XII School in Kamalpur in 1997, followed by postings at Nandanagar Class XII School in Agartala in 2003, Pratikrai Class XII School in Dharmanagar in 2012, and Hindi Derozio Academy English Medium School in Agartala in 2014, before joining Sabroom Class XII Girls School in 2021. Beyond his own institution, he has conducted teacher-training programmes, mentored newly appointed headmasters, contributed to initiatives of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), and taught through Vande Tripura.

Addressing the ceremony, President Murmu said education is the most effective means of achieving equality of opportunity, an ideal guaranteed by the Constitution, and credited teachers with helping India achieve a negligible primary school dropout rate.

Additional bus services have been introduced from the Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus in Siliguri from 7 pm on Friday, September 4, to assist passengers affected by the disruption of train services near New Farakka station.

According to reports, the disruption was caused by land subsidence near the railway tracks at New Farakka station in Malda, which affected rail connectivity between North Bengal and Kolkata, Howrah and adjoining regions in South Bengal. Several trains scheduled for September 4 and 5 were cancelled, including the New Jalpaiguri–Howrah Shatabdi Express and the New Jalpaiguri–Howrah Vande Bharat Express.

West Bengal Minister for Transport and Finance Anandomoy Barman said eight additional buses were deployed from Siliguri, with tickets available at government-regulated fares. According to him, the service will particularly benefit commuters travelling between Kolkata, Siliguri and Cooch Behar.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said railway authorities were carrying out repair and safety work on a war footing. He added that alternative arrangements, including free transport, had been made for passengers stranded between Malda and Murshidabad, with district administrations distributing food packets and water bottles to those affected.

Eastern Railway has initiated restoration work and safety inspections at the affected site to resume normal train operations.

Tripura Sports School, Panisagar, registered a convincing 4–0 victory over Jammu & Kashmir in a group-stage match at the 65th edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, 2026.

The Subroto Cup is one of India’s most prestigious inter-school football tournaments, held annually in New Delhi since 1960 under the aegis of the Air Force Sports Control Board and the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society. It falls under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and brings together champion school teams from states and union territories across the country.

Tripura Sports School, Panisagar, had earlier secured its place in the National Championship after winning the State Under-15 Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament. The team’s win over Jammu & Kashmir adds to its campaign in the national-level competition.

As many as 763 nomination papers have been filed so far across 25 blocks for the upcoming Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), State Election Commission Secretary Anurag Sen said on Friday, September 4.

Nominations close on September 8, with scrutiny on September 9 and withdrawal of candidature allowed until September 11. Polling will take place on September 28, and counting of votes will be held on October 5, with repolling, if needed, on October 3.

The elections will fill 4,597 seats across 2,634 constituencies in 587 Village Committees. According to the final electoral rolls, 9,61,977 voters are eligible to participate, including 4,82,041 male voters, 4,79,930 female voters and six third-gender voters, across 1,550 polling stations.

The Model Code of Conduct has come into force in TTAADC areas following the announcement of the schedule. This marks the first Village Committee election in the region after a gap of over a decade, with the previous elected bodies’ term having ended on March 8, 2021.
