FROM GHOSH TO REANG: SURNAME CHANGE SPARKS QUESTIONS IN TRIPURA
A name-change affidavit involving the surname change from “Ghosh” to “Reang” has sparked public discussion in Tripura, where tribal identity remains closely linked to constitutional safeguards and indigenous rights.
In a Sixth Schedule state with a sensitive history surrounding tribal identity and demographic concerns, the move has raised questions over whether a change in surname could potentially create confusion about an individual's community identity.
While changing a name through an affidavit is legally permitted, the development has triggered a larger public debate: Can a surname change alone affect how a person's tribal identity is perceived?
The affidavit itself confirms the old and new names belong to the same person. However, the issue has drawn attention because “Reang” is associated with one of Tripura's indigenous tribal communities.
The larger question now being raised is whether existing safeguards are strong enough to prevent any confusion between a change of name and a person's legally recognised tribal identity.
