Star seen swallowing planet for 1st time, scientists say 'Earth to meet similar fate'

In a study published in Nature journal, scientists from MIT, Harvard University and Caltech said that they have observed a star swallowing a planet for the first time. Scientists added that it happened in our own galaxy, some 12,000 light-years away, near constellation Aquila. "Earth will meet a similar fate in 5 billion years," they further said.

Mukesh Ambani's group is getting into genetic mapping as it will launch a ₹12,000 genome sequencing test, according to Ramesh Hariharan, Chief Executive Officer of Strand Life Sciences, which has developed the product. Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, acquired the Bengaluru-based Strand Life Sciences in 2021 and now owns about 80% of it.

What is a widowmaker heart attack?

STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) or widowmaker is the most serious type of heart attack. "A widowmaker heart attack happens when a full blockage of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) occurs. The left anterior descending artery (LAD) supplies 50% of heart muscle blood," Dr Venkatesh TK of Apollo Hospitals said. Heart attacks have become increasingly rampant in recent years.

Electronic bandage that speeds healing by 30% made: Study

Northwestern University researchers have developed a "first-of-its-kind" small, flexible, stretchable bandage that accelerates healing by delivering electrotherapy directly to the wound site. It healed diabetic ulcers 30% faster in mice than when they were without it. The bandage monitors the healing process and then harmlessly dissolves into the body after it is no longer needed.

Air pollution speeds up bone loss from osteoporosis: Study

Increased levels of pollutants like nitrous oxides in the air are linked with bone damage, causing osteoporosis among postmenopausal women, a study has found. Researchers found that the effects of nitrous oxides were most evident on the lumbar spine. One in two women over 50 years of age experiences bone fracture because of osteoporosis, researchers said.

Organ damage persists in almost 59% of long COVID patients: Study

Organ damage persisted in 59% of long COVID-19 patients a year after initial symptoms, scientists have found. The damages occurred even in those patients who were not severely affected by the virus. Notably, 29% of patients with long COVID-19 had a multi-organ impairment with persistent symptoms and reduced function at six and twelve months, it stated.

Male contraceptive pill prototype stops s***m swimming

An experimental contraceptive drug candidate developed in the US temporarily stopped s***m in their tracks and prevented pregnancies in preclinical models. In the study, a single dose of an sAC inhibitor called 'TDI-11861' immobilised mice s***m for up to two and half hours, with full fertility returning 24 hours later. Unlike the female contraceptive pill, it doesn't involve any hormones.

Neither any type nor any amount of alcohol is safe, can cause cancer: WHO

As per WHO, there's no safe type or amount of alcohol that doesn't affect health. Alcohol can cause seven types of cancer, including bowel and female breast cancer, WHO stated. "Ethanol causes cancer...as the compound breaks down in the body, which means...any beverage containing alcohol, regardless of its price and quality, poses a risk of developing cancer," WHO's research stated.

Who is AC Charania, NASA's new Chief Technologist?

Indian-American AC Charania has been named NASA's new Chief Technologist to lead the US government's space agency's technology innovation. Before joining NASA, he worked at Reliable Robotics, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic. Charania received a bachelor's and a master's degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a bachelor's in economics from Emory University.

Earth's ozone layer on track to recover within 40 years: UN report

The Earth's ozone layer is on track to recover within four decades, a UN-backed panel of experts has said. In a report published every four years on the progress of the Montreal Protocol, the panel confirmed the phase-out of nearly 99% of banned ozone-depleting substances. However, the panel warned of the unintended impacts of new technologies such as geoengineering.
