The Gītā teaches that the ātman (soul) is eternal and merely takes on a new body, just as a person changes clothes. In Chapter 2, Verse 22, Śrī Kṛṣṇa says:
vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya / navāni gṛhṇāti naro ‘parāṇi
tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāni / anyāni saṁyāti navāni dehī
This means the soul exits one worn‑out body and enters a new one, under the law of karma and time.
“Exit” refers to death, when the soul leaves the body and carries with it its desires, tendencies, and past impressions (saṁskāras). The Gītā explains that the state of mind at the moment of exit largely determines the soul’s next situation.
