Road blockade drives up charcoal and gas prices in Tedim

Khonumthung News: 25 August 2025

Charcoal and gas prices have surged in Tedim Town, Tedim Township, northern Chin State, following the junta’s blockade of the vital Kale-Taingen (Siyin) Road linking Kale in Sagaing Region to northern Chin State.

Although the Chinland Defense Force-Civic Defense Militia Siyin (CDF-CDM Siyin) has announced the reopening of the Kale-Taingen Road, the junta continues to block the section near Shu Khin Thar area, on the outskirts of Kale Town, leaving travelers unable to use the route.

As a result, the number of trucks reaching Tedim has dropped sharply, forcing residents to rely on alternative routes, mainly using motorbikes, to bring goods into the town.

Four children injured in unexploded artillery shell blast in Matupi

Khonumthung News: 22 August 2025

An unexploded artillery shell detonated in Thlangpanga Village, Matupi Township, Chin State, injuring four children, two of them seriously, according to locals.

On the afternoon of August 18, a 60 mm artillery shell, an ordnance remnant, exploded on the outskirts of the village while children were playing with it.

“The children were playing nearby, and it seemed they had come into contact with the unexploded shell. The blast was so powerful that four of them were injured, including two who were seriously hurt,” a Thlangpanga villager said.

The injured children, aged between 5 and 12, included one who was directly hit by the blast, while three others nearby were also wounded.

The explosion site was formerly a camp of the Chinland Defence Force – Matupi (CDF-Matupi), a local resistance group. However, it remains unclear which organization that explosive remnant belonged to.

Thlangpanga Village, situated about 10 miles from Matupi Town along the Matupi–Mindat Highway, was raided and set ablaze by junta troops in early 2024.

The CDF-Matupi Brigade 1 was previously stationed in Thlangpanga Village, which came under bombardment by junta forces on June 5 and 6, 2024.

Junta shooting in Hakha injures three, including schoolgirls

Khonumthung News: 21 August 2025

Three civilians, including two schoolgirls, were injured when junta troops opened fire in central Hakha City, the capital of Chin State.

Around 11:30 am on August 20, a shooting occurred in Hakha City, a territory still under junta control in Chin State. A man was shot in the stomach, and two schoolgirls sustained leg injuries.

“The reports of a shooting are true. Junta troops reportedly opened fire, injuring a man in the stomach and two young girls in the legs. As far as we know, the girls are school students,” said a Hakha resident.

The two girls sustained minor injuries, while the man’s condition is serious. He was not a resident of Hakha City, but came from nearby Surngen Village.

The exact reason why the junta opened fire on civilians remains unknown. According to locals, junta troops have tightened security in Hakha City and are conducting strict checks on pedestrians.

Junta airstrike hits Kanpetlet, destroys five houses

Khonumthung News: 19 August 2025

The junta launched an airstrike on Kanpetlet Town in southern Chin State’s Kanpetlet Township, damaging five houses but causing no injuries.

A fighter jet that took off from Aye Lar Airbase in the capital, Naypyidaw, carried out two bombing runs on Kanpetlet on the morning of August 17.

“The plane dropped bombs in the morning, but no one was hurt. Several houses in the central wards, near the town’s school, were badly damaged. People had already taken shelter in the orchards, so the houses were empty when the air raid struck,” a Kanpetlet Town resident said.

Although Kanpetlet Town is under the control of Chin resistance forces and has been declared a junta-free zone, most locals have not returned and continue to shelter in safer areas, leaving the town with only a small population.

Airstrikes have intensified in resistance-controlled townships across Myanmar since the junta imposed martial law on these townships on July 31.

Junta carries out series of targeted abductions of young men in Hakha

Khonumthung News: 13 August 2025

In Hakha, the capital of Chin State, the junta has carried out a series of targeted abductions of young men, seizing more than 50 in just one week.

In Hakha City, one of the few areas in Chin State still under its control, the junta has intensified abductions targeting young men since early August, with at least two mass abductions reported in the past week, a resident said.

“The mass abduction on August 10 was the second time it happened. The first time, they took more than 30 young men. Soldiers waited at intersections for young men coming back from church and arrested them. Local elders and church leaders tried to negotiate their release, but the junta wouldn’t agree,” he told Khonumthung News.

Junta arrests 40 young men in Hakha, only 8 released

Khonumthung News: 6 August 2025

The junta arrested 40 young men in Hakha City, the capital of Chin State, and only eight have been released, with the rest still in detention.

On August 3, the junta arrested young men at a tea shop along the Hakha-Gangaw Highway, as well as those returning from Sunday church services, a total of 40 individuals.

“We don’t know why the junta made these arrests. All of those taken were civilians with no ties to the armed resistance. Targeting innocent people like this is completely unacceptable. Arresting young people who were just coming back from church is also a clear violation of religious freedom. Some people believe the junta may have abducted them for conscription, but we can’t say that for certain. As far as we know, there haven’t been any previous cases of conscription-related abductions in Hakha, so right now, we really don’t know what the junta’s intentions are,” said the chairman of the Chinland Defence Force – Hakha (CDF-Hakha).

CDF-Kanpetlet closes roads in Daa Yindu area near Magway-Chin border

Khonumthung News: 5 August 2025

Roads in the Daa Yindu area of Kanpetlet Township, southern Chin State, near the border with Magway Region, will be closed for a week starting August 4 due to urgent defense and security needs, according to an August 4 announcement by the Khonum Battalion (Battalion 5) of the Chinland Defence Force - Kanpetlet (CDF-Kanpetlet).

Following the junta’s July 31 announcement of a rebranded governing body, retaining the same leadership, it declared states of emergency and imposed martial law in more than 60 resistance-held townships nationwide, including Kanpetlet. In response, CDF-Kanpetlet temporarily closed roads in the Daa Yindu area.

“The announcement said that roads in the Daa Yindu area, which is under the Khonum Battalion’s control, will be closed for a few days. Since Kanpetlet is one of the 63 townships the junta has placed under states of emergency, the battalion decided to temporarily close the roads to strengthen defense and security measures. But travel and trade in the region are still operating as usual. It’s more accurate to see this as an early warning, so that if tighter security becomes necessary, people will be ready to cooperate right away,” a spokesperson for the CDF-Kanpetlet said.

Assessing how the junta’s second chapter of rule will impact Chin State

Khonumthung News: 5 August 2025

The junta leader described the more than four and a half years of rule since the coup as the regime’s first chapter, announcing that a second chapter has now begun. This declaration followed the junta’s move to prolong its grip on power by rebranding the State Administration Council (SAC), the coup regime’s governing body, as a new entity called the National Security and Peace Commission (NSPC).

On July 31, coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing convened a meeting of the National Defense and Security Council (NDSC), where it was decided to dissolve the SAC and establish the NSPC. During the meeting, full authority was formally transferred from SAC leader Min Aung Hlaing to acting president Min Aung Hlaing, the very same person, simply shifting from one role to another.

The NSPC was established under Min Aung Hlaing’s leadership to provide necessary guidance for the successful conduct of the upcoming election, as well as to promote security and peace, the NDSC meeting announced. The NDSC meeting also urged all political parties to make necessary preparations ahead of the junta-orchestrated election scheduled for December.

Junta Blockades Cause Tedim Town Price Rises

Khonumthung News: 24 July 2025

Commodity prices in Chin State’s Tedim Town are rising because the junta has blocked main road from Sagaing Region’s Kale Town to northern Chin State.

The road runs from Kale Town to Taingen Village in Tedim Township, but the junta has blockaded it at the Shu Khin Thar viewpoint near Kale Town.

A Tedim Town resident said: “The main issue is the road closures around Shu Khin Thar. There are alternative routes, but they’re in terrible condition, so the journey takes much longer than usual.

What used to be a one-day trip now often takes two or three days. Some parts of the dirt roads are covered in deep mud, and vehicles keep getting stuck. On top of that, transport costs have gone up. As a result, food prices have risen. Items like chicken and eggs are in short supply and only available from time to time. The price of rice is also going up.”

Educators from Seven Countries Lead Peace Education for Future Generations

An Online Peace Educator Training Program was held from June 28 to August 9, taking place every Saturday across six sessions. The program brought together 94 educators and organizational leaders from seven countries: Burundi, Cameroon, India, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, and Timor-Leste. The participation of education professionals from multiple regions and continents highlights that peace education is emerging as a global trend that transcends national boundaries.

Participants acknowledged the need for peace education into their national education systems and, in collaboration with HWPL(Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light), engaged in demonstrations of the 12 units of HWPL’s Peace Textbook. Participants also attended a special lecture titled “The Role of a Peace Teacher.” Through lectures, Q&A sessions, and weekly assignments, they strengthened their understanding, with the special lecture providing an opportunity to reaffirm their values and responsibilities as educators.

Mapet Machol Majak, Coordinator of Mission Empowering Africa in South Sudan, said, “It was a meaningful day where I could learn ways to advance peace in different parts of the world. Through this training, I came to understand what is needed for peace and will work to put it into practice in South Sudan. I was reminded once again that peace does not belong to one person alone, but to all of us.”

In Timor-Leste, the Ministry of Higher Education coordinated the participation of 21 representatives — including presidents, vice presidents, and professors — from eight higher education institutions. The country’s education sector expects the training to help lay the foundation for the institutional integration of peace education into higher education curricula.

Marcolino Gomes, Professor and Lecturer of Pastoral Theology at Timorese Catholic University (UCT), said, “It was a systematic and comprehensive curriculum with global recognition. I gained values and practical methods for achieving peace and developed the capacity to teach peace to students.”

Fredricka Yula, a teacher at the National Bilingual College Souza in Cameroon, said, “Through this training, I came to understand that peace is not only a global goal but also begins with personal actions such as respect, sacrifice, love, forgiveness, understanding, and good manners. I am grateful to have taken part in this program with HWPL.”

Graduates of the program plan to apply peace education in their schools and communities and to promote it through international cooperation. HWPL stated that it will continue to support these efforts by providing resources and networks tailored to each country’s educational context.
