An image of Pushkar is incomplete without its Kalbeliya dancers. Art is a rounded way of being for the community that still lives in harmony with nature. Kalbeliya, a nomadic tribe of Rajasthan, is known the world-over for their famous dance form thanks to the noted dancer Gulabo Sapera. What seldom comes into focus though is how art is a rounded way of being for the community. And, their art is sustainable, just like their way of life. Living mostly in tents and basic houses, the Kalbeliyas make beautiful beaded jewellery, mattresses out of old odhanis and have ran expertise in making coal - the exact temperature of baking coal they know through years of painstaking effort. The Kalbeliyas are artists who travel the world and yet come back to lives of poverty. However, this doesn’t dampen their spirit and their grace of living in the moment with full enthusiasm. We, at Ajmeriyat, believe in supporting local art and craft!

Patriotism, Pride, Permanence

A 200-feet high flag at Circuit House unfurled on Independence Day against the beautiful Anasagar in the background adds a tricoloured note to the soothing music of blue reflections. May this flag continue to remind us that pride and patriotism are not meant only for Independence Day and Republic Day but are a permanent view from the window of our thoughts, just like our beloved Anasagar!

Tricoloured Solidarity

Among administrative units quintessential to the functioning of the city is the Police Force. On the eve of our 75th Independence Day, the district Police Force carried out a rally in solidarity with the ghar-ghar Tiranga campaign. They were cheered with showers of flower petals at some locations! The grandeur of the rally inspired the onlookers!

Lighting Up In Style

While all government monuments are lit up in tricolour, this building in Haribhau Upadhyay Nagar bears resemblance to a huge 3-D flag and is attracting attention of city dwellers who can clearly spot this from other colonies.

Wisdom

Sophia, from the Greek Σοφία means wisdom. Sophia School and College located across each other on Jaipur Road are institutions symbolising a significant aspect of our city itself – the quest for and attainment of wisdom. No wonder, they are a prominent landmark of the city as you enter it from the Delhi side. The landmark is even more important in terms of the beliefs of our town. Mother Mary Matilda, who was honoured with the title, ‘The First Lady in the Cause of Women’s Education’, was the first Principal of Sophia School, established in 1919, an English Medium school meant exclusively for girls.

Along with her brother, Rt. Rev. Bishop Fortunatus Caumont, she also went on to establish Sophia College in 1959. She opened Houses in the villages, with Welfare Centres, to attend to the medical needs of the poor and many more schools to educate children of the rural and tribal areas. We do believe that behind all educational pursuits is wisdom. We, at Ajmeriyat, on Rajasthan’s 73rd Foundation Day, pay tribute to the foundation of wisdom that is a hallmark of our city. We believe that whoever comes here returns wiser and more grounded. “Seek Ye Wisdom,” as the motto of Sophia implores!

Devotion

मीरा कहे राणा हूँ तने ना वरूँ, तू आज जीवे काल मरी जाय
वरूँ म्हारा सवारियां ने, म्हारो चूड़लो अमर होई जाय

Meera says, Rana, look here, if I get married to you, you’ll live today and die tomorrow. But if I get wedded to my beloved Krishna, my wedding bangles are eternal.
(Translation borrowed from Kabir scholar Ms. Shabnam Virmani’s work)

A land fragrant with the spirit of devotion of a Sufi saint celebrates neighbouring Merta’s Meera Bai’s fervour at this monument and garden at its most prominent landmark - Anasagar Chowpatty. The beauty of the Bhakti tradition is in its inclusivity. Among Meerabai’s fellow travellers of the Bhakti Movement, Ras Khan also sang of Lord Krishna. Kabir and Rahim brought the many flavours of true devotion in their words. While in Punjab, Gurunanak’s shabads filled people’s hearts with the glory of the Guru, Sufi poets like Bulleh Shah sang praises of the Maula along with generating vibes of brotherhood and togetherness. Devotion, a feminine tenet, is gender neutral. Ajmer believes in inclusivity, and the need for it now, more than ever before. We need to strengthen the true essence of Bhakti within us, just how this statue of one of the most celebrated women of our state needs to be looked after. On our 910th Foundation Day, we, at Ajmeriyat, believe that devotion, among the most powerful tenets of the ethos of Ajmer, is eternal. Just like Meerabai’s bangles.

We send you greetings on Ajmer Foundation Day and hope that we take pride in our true heritage of inclusivity today and every day.

Healing!

Victoria jaana hai? Tempo Victoria par rukega!

This is a commonly heard line in the markets of Ajmer in terms of transport and reference. Victoria Hospital, now JLN, one of Ajmer’s biggest landmark was named after a woman. And, in many ways, it has been a mother to the city of Ajmer what with so many children of Ajmer being born there because of their parents’ trust in the hospital. The hospital was established during colonial times in the building which now houses the Ajmer Municipal Corporation. The first component of this hospital was a dispensary constructed in 1851 and then a full-fledged hospital was constructed in 1895.
In 1928, the hospital was moved to its present location and called New Victoria Hospital which was renamed after Jawaharlal Nehru a few years after Independence. However, old-timers continue to call it Victoria even today.
A source of livelihood not just for the people who are employed in the hospital, but also around it, JLN is the referral hospital for the districts of Ajmer, Bhilwara, Nagaur and Tonk. The various shops around it gradually turned into medical shops due to the importance of the hospital.
Though fancier hospitals with more comfort are now accessible in Ajmer, round-the-clock access to specialists is still available only here and like you only remember your mother when in pain, this hospital is the most trusted one in an emergency. After all, toppers get admission to the college associated with it which has now completed 57 years.
