August 11: Two residents of the Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), received Session Best Awards at the 12th International Conference on Public Health (ICOPH) 2026, held in Bali, Indonesia. The residents participated in the conference virtually.

Dr. Syed Sohaib Hashmi, Senior Resident, received the award for his presentation, Immune Status and Its Clinico-Epidemiological Correlates Among Adults Living with HIV, conducted under the guidance of Prof. Mohammad Athar Ansari. The study examined immune status among adults living with HIV and factors influencing immune recovery.

Dr. Mohammad Bilal, Junior Resident-3, received the second Session Best Award for his presentation, Weight Gain and MUAC Recovery Following Nutrition Education of Primary Caregivers in Moderately Malnourished Children Aged 6–59 Months: A Community-Based Quasi-Experimental Study from North India, under the guidance of Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi. The study evaluated the impact of nutrition education of primary caregivers on weight gain and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) recovery among moderately malnourished children.

Prof. Uzma Eram, Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine, along with Prof. Saira Mehnaz and other senior faculty members, congratulated the residents and appreciated their contribution to public health research and academic excellence.

August 11: The Faculty of Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), condoled the demise of Dr. Syed Wajid Ali Naqvi, former faculty member of the Department of Biochemistry, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), who passed away Sunday last.

Expressing a deep sense of grief at a condolence meeting of the staff and students of the Faculty of Medicine, the Dean, Prof. Mohammad Khalid conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.Faculty members and students also prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and strength and patience to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss.

A proud Aligarian, Dr. Naqvi had a close association with AMU spanning several decades. He joined the University as an undergraduate student in 1954 and obtained his B.Sc. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from AMU. He joined JNMC as a faculty member in 1965 and served until his retirement in 1996.

During his long association with the University, Dr. Naqvi held several academic and administrative responsibilities, including membership of the Academic Council, and served as Warden of Sir Syed Hall and Habib Hall, Acting Provost, Member of the Sports Council and President of the Gymnasium Club.

After his retirement from JNMC, he continued his academic association with medical education, serving on the faculty of ERA's Lucknow Medical College & Hospital and Al Fateh Medical University, Tripoli, Libya.

The faculty members recalled Dr. Naqvi as a link between generations of Aligarians, having himself been an Aligarian and later becoming the father of four Aligarians. His long association with the University, both as a student and teacher, and his contributions to academic and residential life will be remembered with respect and affection.

August 11: The Department of Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), hosted the 18th Annual National Conference of the India Hernia Society (IHSCON 2026), bringing together leading specialists and surgeons for academic discussions on contemporary advances in hernia surgery.

Held on the theme “Breaching the Challenges”, the conference was organised under the leadership of Prof. Atia Zaka-ur-Rab, Organising Chairman, and Prof. Wasif Mohammad Ali, Organising Secretary, with the support of faculty members, residents and staff of the Department of Surgery. The national leadership of the India Hernia Society was represented by Dr. Amit Srivastava, President, and Dr. Hemanga K. Bhattacharjee, Honorary Secretary.

Prof. S. K. Misra, Vice President, National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), graced as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Tariq Mansoor, former Vice Chancellor, AMU, was the Guest of Honour.

Prof. Misra highlighted the importance of structured postgraduate training and informed the delegates about various NBEMS-accredited academic programmes. He encouraged JNMC to explore introducing such programmes to further strengthen postgraduate medical education.

Prof. Mansoor emphasised the importance of academic excellence and continuous learning in surgical training. He encouraged young surgeons to remain committed to research, skill development and excellence in their professional careers.

The two-day scientific programme featured keynote lectures, panel discussions, debates, research paper presentations and a live operative workshop. Experts discussed contemporary surgical approaches to hernia, ranging from open and minimally invasive procedures to robotic surgery. The conference also facilitated exchange of ideas, professional networking and potential academic and research collaborations.

Dr. V. Avinash K. Vegi, Dr. Md. Fareeduddin and Dr.Aun Ali Mehdi secured the first, second and third positions, respectively, in the competitive oral paper presentation, while Dr.Noorie S. August 10:Dr. Faisal Hassan, Assistant Professor and Programme Coordinator, Clinical Psychology, Manipal Tata Medical College, Jamshedpur, and alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been selected as a Fellow of the MAHE FAIMER International Institute for Leadership in Interprofessional Education (M-FIILIPE) 2026.

The prestigious two-year fellowship combines residential sessions at Manipal with online mentoring and project-based learning, focusing on leadership and interprofessional education in healthcare. Fellows undertake interprofessional projects, present their findings and mentor junior fellows.

Dr. Hassan will attend the fellowship at the MAHE-FAIMER Institute in Manipal and subsequently in Philadelphia, USA. He has earlier received a research award from the World Health Organization for his study on the psychosocial impact of mental disorders in India and has presented his research at national and international forums.

An alumnus of AMU, Dr. Hassan completed his Master's in Clinical Psychology and Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology from AMU in 2020.

Dr. Hassan credited his achievements to the support of his family and mentors at AMU.

August 10: The Training and Placement Office (General), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised a recruitment drive of Talent Recruit Software Pvt. Ltd., a Bengaluru-based company specialising in AI-powered recruitment and onboarding solutions, in which seven girl students secured employment opportunities after multiple rounds of assessment.

August 10: Mohd. Shahid Raza, a student of the Residential Coaching Academy (RCA), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has qualified the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) Examination 2025 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and has been selected for the post of Assistant Commandant (AC).

The CAPF (Assistant Commandants) Examination is a highly competitive national-level recruitment examination for induction of officers into the Central Armed Police Forces.

Prof. Mohd. Hasan, Director, RCA, along with the RCA administration, congratulated Mohd. Shahid Raza on his achievement and appreciated his dedication and performance.

August 10: The Hospital Infection Society India (HISI), Aligarh Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programme on “Nursing Antimicrobial Stewardship Practices: Empowering Nurses to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance” at the Nursing College, AMU.

Organised under the aegis of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the Society for Antimicrobial Stewardship Practices in India (SASPI), the programme aimed to strengthen nursing professionals’ knowledge and skills in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, and rational antibiotic use.

Prof. Mohammad Khalid, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, highlighted the crucial role of nurses in preserving the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents, while Prof. Farha Azmi, Principal, Nursing College, encouraged nurses to translate evidence-based practices into patient care.

Prof. Adil Raza, Chairperson, Department of Microbiology, JNMC, emphasised the importance of continuous professional development and multidisciplinary collaboration in tackling antimicrobial resistance.

Prof. Fatima Khan, Organising Secretary and Secretary, HISI, Aligarh Chapter, delivered an interactive session on the role of nursing staff and students in antimicrobial stewardship. The scientific session featured Prof. Meher Rizvi, Professor, Department of Microbiology, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman, who discussed antimicrobial stewardship principles, appropriate antibiotic use, infection prevention and control, specimen collection and documentation, and monitoring of antimicrobial therapy.

A role play demonstrated practical aspects of antimicrobial stewardship in routine clinical settings, while a quiz conducted by Dr. Shariq Ahmed reinforced key concepts and encouraged participant engagement.

The programme coordinated by Mr. Pradeep, Nursing Officer, JNMCH, was attended by around 150 nursing professionals, educators, infection control nurses and students. It concluded with a vote of thanks by ANS Mrs. Huma Ruhi.
