The Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology at Dr. Z.A. Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised an interactive session for newly admitted BDS students of the 2026 batch to familiarise them with the first-year curriculum and its clinical relevance.

Conducted by the Chairman of the department, Dr. Nasir Ahmad Salati, the session introduced students to core subjects, including Dental Anatomy, Oral Histology and Oral Biology, highlighting their importance in building a strong foundation for dental education and clinical practice.

He emphasized the clinical and academic significance of these disciplines in dentistry. The event provided an engaging platform for the new students to understand their academic roadmap and interact with their mentors.

Faculty members Dr. Kausar J. Khwaja, Dr. Masood H. Khan and Dr. Shahla Khan welcomed the students and encouraged them to pursue academic excellence. The interaction also provided an opportunity for the newcomers to understand their academic roadmap and engage with faculty mentors.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised a breast cancer awareness camp to promote early detection, regular screening and preventive care.

Prof. Shaheen, Chairperson of the department, highlighted the importance of timely diagnosis and regular breast self-examination, urging women to overcome hesitation and seek medical advice promptly. She emphasised that early detection significantly improves the prospects of successful treatment and recovery.

Dr. Roshan Perween demonstrated breast self-examination techniques through a presentation using graphics and visual aids. Faculty members Prof. Tamkin Khan, Prof. Nishat Akhtar, Prof. Zehra Mohsin, Prof. Nasreen Noor, Dr. Nazia Ishrat and Dr. Deeba Khanam, along with senior and junior residents, interacted with patients and provided guidance on breast health.

Prof. Atia Zaka-ur-Rab, Chairperson, Department of Surgery, shared information on breast cancer prevention, hygiene and available care options.

Members of the Aligarh Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (AOGS) also participated in the camp. Prof. Tamkin Khan, President, AOGS, and Dr. Sumbul Naim, Secretary, AOGS, reinforced the importance of regular breast self-examination. Dr. Naim also shared a breast cancer awareness video prepared by the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) for wider circulation through social media.

October 16: The Sir Syed Day commemorative celebration at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on October 17 will be webcast live for viewers to watch the proceedings from anywhere.

The main programme at Gulistan-e-Syed will begin at 10:45 am. The live webcast will be available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/live/7mm50QDRYIc.

The Department of Mass Communication facilitates the live webcast of the annual celebration through its YouTube channel, enabling alumni, well-wishers and others unable to attend the event in person to join the university community in commemorating the life and legacy of its founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

STS School (Minto Circle), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised an inter-school English speech competition as part of the Sir Syed Day celebrations, providing students from various AMU schools a platform to showcase their oratory skills and reflect on the educational ideals of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

Mr. Mohd. Azam Khan, Deputy Director, Directorate of School Education, AMU, attended as Chief Guest and emphasised the importance of communication skills, reading habits and independent thinking. Mr. Mohammad Abdul Qadeer, Assistant Director, Directorate of School Education, AMU, was the Guest of Honour and highlighted the role of co-curricular activities in building students’ confidence and leadership qualities.

Principal Mr. Faisal Nafis welcomed the guests and participants, stressing the importance of literary activities in students’ overall development. Mr. Syed Tanweer Nabi, former Principal of RMPS AMU City School, judged the competition and encouraged participants to develop clarity, logical reasoning and confidence in public speaking.

Abdul Wali of Sayyid Hamid Senior Secondary School won first prize, followed by Sifaat un Nabi of STS School in second place and Taiba Nusrat of AMU Girls’ School in third. Consolation prizes were shared by Anam Fatima of Senior Secondary School (Girls) and Asmar Arafat of AMU ABK High School (Boys).

The event was organised with the support of Dr. Md. Alamgir, Vice Principal, STS School; Mr. Mohd. Tariq; Dr. Naseem Ahmad; Mr. Malik Mohammad Arshad; Mr. Farhan Habib; Mrs. Uzma Khan; Mrs. Saiyada Fatima Hashmi; Mr. Mudassir Ali Rizvi; Mrs. Ghazala Tanvir; and Ms. Nasreen Fatima, Coordinator, Cultural Activities. October 15: Prof. Orus Ilyas of the Department of Wildlife Sciences, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), and research scholar Umrah Viqar presented their research at the 36th European Mustelid Colloquium, held alongside the Białowieża Ecology Conference in Białowieża, Poland.

Prof. Ilyas presented a paper titled “The Underappreciated Apex: Reviewing the Ecological Role and Conservation Status of the Yellow-throated Marten (Martes flavigula) Across the Himalayan and East Asian Bioregions”, examining the species’ ecological significance and conservation status across the Himalayan and East Asian regions.

Umrah Viqar presented her research on “Ecological Insight into the Yellow-throated Martens, Martes flavigula: Habitat Use and Dietary Pattern in the Reserved Forest of Ranikhet Kumaon, Himalayas”, focusing on the species’ habitat use and dietary patterns in the Himalayan region.

The presentations highlighted the ecological importance of the yellow-throated marten and the need for a better understanding of its ecology, distribution and conservation challenges.

Prof. Ilyas received financial assistance from the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Government of India, and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) to participate in the conference, while Umrah Viqar received support from the organisers.

Abdullah School, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), celebrated Sir Syed Day with inter-school competitions, student speeches and science and arts exhibitions, highlighting the educational vision and legacy of the university’s founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

Students from various AMU schools participated in competitions on two themes: Portrait of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Any Building of AMU. In the portrait category, Ruhi Afsha of AMU City Girls’ School, secured first position, followed by Ayush Sharma, AMU ABK School (Boys), and Aradhya Kumari, AMU ABK School (Girls), in second and third positions, respectively.

In the building category, Ifra Ghausia, AMU Girls’ School, won first position, while Madhav Gautam, AMU ABK School (Boys), and Sadia Fatima, Abdullah School, secured second and third positions, respectively.

Class V students Maryam and Nabeela of Abdullah School delivered speeches on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, highlighting his life, contributions and vision for modern education. Their presentations were appreciated by the audience.

The science and arts exhibitions were another major attraction, with students displaying science models, drawings and other artworks. The exhibits showcased their creativity, innovation and interest in learning.

Mr. Mohammed AbdulQadeer, Assistant Director of School Education, AMU, attended as Chief Guest and encouraged students to follow Sir Syed’s ideals and contribute to the progress of the nation and the institution.

The programme began with a welcome address by Ms. Umra Zaheer, who also spoke about Sir Syed’s life and ideas. It was organised under the guidance of Superintendent Ms. Umar Zaheer, with Ms. Asma Farooqui serving as Event Coordinator and Ms. Anjum Anwar as anchor. Ms. Arshia Aftab, Ms. Aleena Khan and Ms. Tuba Kamal managed the event, while Ms. Ambreen Zaki and Ms. Sarah Siddiqui coordinated the science exhibition and Ms. Arshia Aftab managed the arts exhibition. Ms. Sheeba Siddiqui proposed the vote of thanks.
