This sunset will live rent free in my mind forever. I had no expectations when I walked to this canal in Amsterdam for an evening stroll, just my phone, tulips everywhere, bikes lined up, and the Dutch flag swaying above. Then the sun dropped behind the houses and the whole water turned gold, with that tour boat gliding by and the Oude Kerk tower glowing against the sky. I am from the US and I have seen a lot of city sunsets, but this felt different, calm, romantic, and so European. Walking down this orange tree street with my iced coffee in hand, I finally felt like I was really in Seville. The Spanish flag above, the sound of people at the cafes, a bike passing by, and there it was, La Giralda tower rising over the cathedral like it has for centuries. If you had told me last year I would be standing alone by a canal in Amsterdam with bikes next to me and a tour boat behind me, I would not have believed you. I flew from the US with no big plan, just a list of places I saved on TikTok, and Amsterdam was at the top. This corner near the Oude Kerk with the Dutch flag, the flower boxes, and that old tower in the background felt so cinematic. I stood here for ten minutes just watching the water move and people cross the brick bridges. It is weird how a city you have never been to can instantly feel familiar. There are sunsets and then there is sunset on an Amsterdam canal. I had been walking all day through the city center, past bikes and flower boxes, and I stopped right here when the sky turned orange behind the Oude Kerk. Somewhere between the ferry ride and this flower covered promenade, I realized why Lake Como stays with you forever. I had been dreaming of Italy since I was a teenager in the US, saving pins of colorful houses stacked on the hillside and that iconic Italian flag over the water. I still remember how I felt the first morning I wandered alone through Amsterdam. The sun was out, the canals were sparkling, canal boats were passing with tourists waving, and there was this perfect breeze with flowers everywhere on the railings. I had spent years watching Amsterdam vlogs from the US, dreaming of seeing the Oude Kerk tower and the old bridges in person, and suddenly I was actually here leaning against this railing in my favorite sweater dress. It is funny how a city can make you feel both completely new and totally at home at the same time. This was my third day in the Netherlands and I already knew I would come back. Let me be honest, I didn't expect Amsterdam to feel this magical in real life. I had walked along this canal for an hour, getting lost on purpose, passing bikes, tulips, and little bridges, and then the sunset hit right behind the Oude Kerk tower. You know that feeling when a place looks exactly like your Pinterest board but better? That was Varenna for me. I woke up early, took the slow ferry across Lake Como, and ended up on this flower-lined walkway with the Italian flag waving and the mountains reflecting in the water. For years I told myself Italy was too expensive, too far from the US, maybe next year. But standing here in my little green dress, listening to the boats and smelling fresh espresso from the cafe behind me, I realized I waited too long. This small town on Lake Como is quieter than Bellagio, more romantic than Como city, and it feels like you have the whole lake to yourself.
