Before formula, refrigeration, or vets, ranch women were the ICU. Molly personally adopted the calves, bottle-feeding and hand-rearing them at the ranch headquarters. There was no store-bought milk replacer in 1878. She milked the cows to feed the babies, warming the milk on a wood stove, feeding every 2 hours through the night, wiping their noses, keeping them by the fireplace. Two bulls and two heifers lived because a woman refused to sleep. On a ranch where men’s jobs were cattle and guns, women’s jobs were survival — nursing cowboys, mending clothes, doctoring animals. Mary Ann Goodnight took on several roles while at the JA Ranch. She acted as the ranch manager when Charles was away and nursed everyone. Her bison work was never paid, never famous at the time — just a woman who couldn’t stand hearing calves cry.
