*Illegal Mining Blamed for Water Scarcity: MLA Devsar Shah Holds Public Darbar at Churat*

*Bhat Ashraf*

Kulgam, July 8:MLA Devsar, Feroz Ahmad Shah, on Monday held a Public Darbar at Churat area of Devsar in South Kashmir's Kulgam district, where he raised serious concerns over the worsening water crisis in the region.

While addressing the gathering, Shah blamed illegal mining for the decreasing depth of water bodies, which he termed as the primary cause of water scarcity—affecting both drinking water supply and irrigation for agricultural lands.

"Unregulated and illegal mining has degraded the natural water catchments. This is not just an environmental issue, but a crisis that directly affects people’s lives, particularly farmers and rural households," said Shah.

During the Darbar, residents of Churat shared their grievances with Voice TV Urdu, expressing their long-standing struggle."We have been facing a water crisis for decades. Our only demand is portable drinking water, but unfortunately, the Jal Shakti Department has failed to provide even that," said one of the residents.

Responding to the grievances, MLA Shah assured the locals that he would extend all possible support to the Jal Shakti Department in addressing the issue.
"I have directed the Jal Shakti officials to take urgent steps and begin work on a fast-track basis to ensure portable drinking water is made available to Churat and surrounding areas," Shah stated.
