Himachal Jails House 3,355 Prisoners Against Capacity of 2,580

September3 Shimla: Overcrowding in Himachal Pradesh’s prisons has become a growing concern, with 3,355 inmates lodged in 14 jails against the sanctioned capacity of 2,580. The prisons are therefore housing 775 more inmates than their approved capacity, nearly 30% above the limit. The inmates include 1,113 convicts, 2,203 undertrials and 39 civil or preventive detainees. The issue has also come before the Himachal Pradesh High Court, which has sought a response from the state government....
