Afghan Teenager Survives Perilous Flight Hiding in Plane's Landing Gear
New Delhi , Sep 23 : In a stunning and rare aviation incident, a 13-year-old Afghan boy was discovered alive in the landing gear bay of a commercial flight that arrived in Delhi from Kabul on Sunday. The discovery at Indira Gandhi International Airport has exposed a serious security lapse and highlights the extreme dangers of this desperate form of travel.
The young boy, a resident of Kunduz, was found wandering near the Kam Air flight (RQ-4401) shortly after it landed. Airport security officials, alerted by airline staff, took the visibly shaken teenager into custody. During questioning, he revealed he had stowed away in the aircraft's unpressurized landing gear compartment for the duration of the two-hour flight.
The Dangers of "Wheel-Well Stowaways"
Traveling in a plane's wheel well is a perilous journey with an extremely low survival rate. At cruising altitudes, temperatures can plummet to below -40°C, and the lack of oxygen can quickly lead to unconsciousness and death. The movement of the landing gear during retraction and extension also poses a severe risk of fatal injury. It's considered nothing short of a miracle that the boy survived the journey.
A post-flight inspection of the aircraft's landing gear bay by airline security and engineering teams revealed a small red audio speaker, believed to have been carried by the boy. The plane was subsequently cleared for its return trip after a thorough safety and anti-sabotage check.
Swift Deportation to Kabul
Following a brief interrogation by security agencies, the boy's short-lived and dangerous attempt to enter India came to an end. He was immediately deported and sent back to Kabul on the same airline's return flight, RQ-4402, just hours after his arrival.
This remarkable incident has raised significant questions about security protocols at Kabul's airport and the desperate measures individuals are willing to take in hopes of a better life.
