The Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha!

Nestled in the heart of Onitsha, Nigeria, the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity stands as a beacon of faith and history. Established in 1935 by Bishop Joseph Shanahan, this magnificent edifice is the only basilica in Nigeria and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Onitsha.

The land for the basilica was provided by the ruler of Onitsha at the time; Obi Anazonwu and the chiefs in 1886.

In response to the growing number of worshippers, Archbishop Albert Obiefuna undertook a significant expansion project, completed in 2002.

The basilica’s design incorporates elements of both traditional and modern architecture, making it a unique landmark and often a tourist destination in the heart of Anambra state, Nigeria.

It serves as a cultural and spiritual hub for the people in Anambra neighboring states, hosting numerous religious and community events.

The basilica is also involved in educational initiatives, supporting schools and providing scholarships to students in need.

Home to the relics of Blessed Cyprian Iwene Tansi.
Final resting place for notable figures like Bishop Joseph Shanahan and Archbishops Charles Heerey, Stephen Ezeanya, and Albert Obiefuna.

The basilica was reconstructed post-Nigerian Civil War to align with Vatican II liturgical reforms.
It continues to be a vibrant center for worship, drawing hundreds of faithfuls regularly³.
