After birth, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, leaving behind a short stump.

*How to take care of the stump👇

A baby's umbilical cord stump dries out and
eventually falls off usually within one to three weeks after birth.
In the meantime, treat the area gently.
Keep the stump dry, expose the stump to air to help dry out the base and apply nothing on it.
Especially for those not in Nigeria (countries with better hygienic settings).

🇳🇬But here in Nigeria because of the nature of our environment, we advise to clean the umbilical stump with methylated spirit or apply Chlorhexidine gel on the umbilical stump to help it dry out and
to prevent life threatening sepsis and cord infections.

Keep the front of your baby's diaper folded down to avoid covering the stump.

🧽Stick with sponge baths. While there's no harm in getting the stump wet, sponge baths might make it easier to keep the stump dry.
📍Let the stump fall off on its own. Resist the temptation to pull off the stump yourself.

✅Do not apply engine oil, agbo mentholatum, toothpaste, hot lantern, animal poo on the umbilical stump.

🏮🔥Using hot lantern can lead to burns, uncontrollable bleeding and infection of the umbilical stump.
🧴Applying mentholatum on the cord is not recommended and can cause severe jaundice.

🚿Always maintain strict hand hygiene (wash your hands with soap and water) before and after taking care of the umbilical stump.

D@ths have been recorded. This is the time to prioritize handwashing. Wash your hands with soap and running water.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒Parents encourage your kids not to share their spoons or water bottles in school and make sure they are fully vaccinated against diphtheria 👌

💉The vaccine is also available for adults. Protect your self from diphtheria by getting vaccinated immediately. It’s free👍

Mumps is known as achaka nti or akpukanti in Igbo. Mumps are caused by mumps virus and if not properly managed can result to:
-Mastitis ( Inflammation of the breast tissue)
-facial paralysis
-Infertility in males
-Loss of hearing (temporary or permanent)

TREATMENT
-Relief of pain is important
-Take the child to the hospital
-Encourage child to drink with straw
-Child should avoid sweet food which stimulate salivary glands.

PREVENTION
You can protect your child against mumps by making sure they're given the combined MMR vaccine for mumps, measles and rubella.

The MMR vaccine is part of the routine childhood immunisation .
Your child should be given 1st dose when they're around 13 months and a second booster dose at 15 months.
Once both doses are given, the vaccine provides around 88% protection against mumps.

I had this as a child, my grandmother said the solution was for me to carry a baby goat and run round the compound 😫😫😂😂(Don’t ask me if I did it) 😂😂😂

What is mumps called in your dialect? Have your child received his/her MMR vaccine?
