Bangalore: CPI(M) organised a protest condemning the silence of the Government of India on the US–Israel war on Iran, opposing the steep hike in LPG prices, and demanding strict action against hoarding and black marketing of cooking gas cylinders.

Addressing the protest, CPI(M) Karnataka State Secretary K. Prakash criticised the Centre for failing to condemn the aggression by the United States and Israel on Iran. He said the conflict has destabilised energy supply chains, worsening the shortage of LPG cylinders and pushing up prices. He added that the hike in subsidised and non-subsidised LPG cylinders has further burdened people already struggling with inflation. While people are forced to wait in long queues for refills, domestic gas cylinders are being sold in the black market for up to ₹4,000.

Highlighting the impact of the shortage, he said many student hostels have reduced their food menus or shut down, while restaurants and office canteens are also affected, leading to job losses among gig workers dependent on food delivery services. CPI(M) demanded immediate steps to curb black marketing, ensure adequate LPG supply, control prices, and that the Centre formally condemn the US–Israel war on Iran in Parliament. The protest was also addressed by CPI(M) leaders Gopalakrishna and K. S. Vimala along with leaders from the party’s Bengaluru South and North district committees.

CITU Slams Karnataka Govt’s ‘Haste’ in Labour Code Rules, Holds Protest in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, March 5: Hundreds of workers from various sectors staged a protest demonstration today in front of the Labour Department in Bengaluru under the banner of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), demanding the immediate withdrawal of the regressive draft rules notified by the Karnataka government in line with the anti-worker labour codes of the central government.

CITU strongly criticised the Congress government in Karnataka for its unseemly haste in pushing through these draconian draft rules, even outpacing BJP-ruled states in implementing the labour codes. The organisation demanded that the state government utilise its legislative powers to introduce suitable amendments to the labour codes in order to safeguard the interests of the working people of Karnataka. Only after incorporating such amendments, CITU said, should the government proceed with framing the corresponding rules.

CITU also demanded that both the labour codes and the draft rules be officially published in Kannada to ensure that workers across the state are properly informed and able to participate meaningfully in the consultative process.

Workers from Bengaluru North, Bengaluru South, Bengaluru Rural and Ramanagara districts participated in large numbers in the protest. The demonstration was led by CITU State President Comrade Meenakshi Sundaram and General Secretary S. Varalakshmi.

A memorandum demanding the immediate withdrawal of the notified draft rules, along with proposals to amend the labour codes using the powers vested in the state government, was submitted by district committees of CITU and more than 150 registered trade unions affiliated with the organisation. The objection petitions were received by Additional Labour Commissioner Dr. Manjunath and Joint Labour Commissioner Ravikumar.

IT employees under the banner of the Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) also participated in the protest. Workers and activists from AITUC, who had come to the Labour Department to protest on the issue of minimum wages, joined the demonstration in solidarity.

Police attempted to obstruct the workers who came to submit the memorandum, but the workers resisted by raising slogans and proceeded with the submission.

CITU has been organising demonstrations and submitting objections across various districts of Karnataka over the past few days, witnessing massive participation from workers demanding the withdrawal of the anti-worker draft rules.

Mr. Siddaramaiah, under open skies and cruel weather, why must my children wait for mercy?”

The 22nd day is over; still no justice for those made homeless by the Karnataka Congress government’s bulldozers in Kogilu, Bengaluru. Out of 1,007 victims, 394 are children. All of them are living under tarpaulin sheets in harsh weather conditions.

The victims of the Kogilu demolition, under the banner of the Kogilu Layout Slum Residents Struggle Committee, held a protest demanding immediate rehabilitation. The affected families have been living in the open, without proper shelter, for the past 16 days. On 20 December, the Congress government in Karnataka demolished houses in the Kogilu area of Bangalore, rendering hundreds of people homeless. Although Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced that the victims would be rehabilitated by 1 January, no action has been taken so far. As a result, families continue to survive under tarpaulin sheets in harsh weather conditions.

The protest was organised by the Kogilu Layout Slum Residents Struggle Committee. CPI(M) Bengaluru North Secretariat member Comrade Hulli Umesh and AIDWA leader Comrade Gouramma addressed the gathering, along with leaders from other progressive organisations.

A delegation led by CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Comrade A. A. Rahim visited Waseem Layout and Fakeer Colony in the Kogilu area of North Bangalore, where the Congress Government in Karnataka carried out a brutal demolition drive that has rendered hundreds of families homeless. The demolition was carried out in the early hours of the morning, with bulldozers arriving suddenly and residents being ordered to vacate immediately. Within a very short time, houses were razed to the ground, and people were not even allowed to take their basic belongings.

Comrade Rahim interacted with the affected families, listened to their grievances, and assured them of all support. He strongly condemned the inhuman manner in which the evictions were carried out and demanded that the Karnataka government immediately halt any further demolition and called for the urgent rehabilitation of all the affected families.

DYFI Karnataka State Secretary Comrade Basavaraj Pujar and CPI(M) Bengaluru North District Secretariat member Comrade Hulli Umesh were also part of the delegation, expressing solidarity with the victims and reiterating the demand for justice and dignified rehabilitation for all those displaced.

Bangalore: More than twenty thousand people assembled at Freedom Park, under the banner of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), giving expression to the growing resistance of the working people against neoliberal policies and the urgent demand for a pro-people political alternative in Karnataka.

As the anti-people, pro-corporate class character of the BJP, Congress, and JD(S) stands increasingly exposed, workers and other toiling sections are seeking a credible political force that defends their class interests. Responding to this objective necessity, the CPI(M) has launched a statewide campaign to foreground people’s issues and advance a left, democratic alternative.

The mass gathering, inaugurated by Polit Bureau Member Comrade U. Vasuki and presided over by Comrade U. Basavaraj, with addresses by State Secretary Comrade K. Prakash and other leaders, brought together toiling sections from across the State—from agricultural labourers to IT sector employees. This historic mobilisation on 21 December marks an important step towards consolidating class unity and strengthening the Left alternative in Karnataka.
