Riding on higher planting of pulses and oilseeds, the crop area has gone up by 2.61% from last year. Area sown to wheat, the main rabi crop, has also increased by 2.53% to 33.54 million hectares so far in the ongoing 2020-21 rabi season from 32.67 million hectares in the year-ago period, according to the agriculture ministry.There is significant rise in pulses and oilseeds area indicating a bumper crop this year. The pulses area has gone up by 4.52% while oilseeds area, mainly mustard is up by 5.15%. This is likely to reduce our dependence on imports,” said a senior agriculture ministry official.In Punjab, where there is maximum protest, sowing of wheat is almost completed covering over 3.5 million hectare.“Availability of water for irrigation has resulted in rise in area of rice, which is up by 2.69% from last year. Till last week, sowing of rice had lagged as compared to last year. But rains helped farmers expand rice area. However, area of rice is still down by 55% as compared to normal sowing, which covers 4.17 million hectares during this period,” the official said.Meanwhile, the government has also scaled up procurement exercise for its central pool purchasing more than 52 million tonnes of paddy, which is 27% more than last year during this period. Punjab alone contributed close to 39% of the total procurement so far.
“The government has transferred around Rs one lakh crore to over 6.8 million rice farmers against procurement,” the official said.
