The government will launch a Rs 1,000-crore seed fund for startups, called Startup India Seed Fund, which will help startups with the initial capital for growth and operations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Going ahead, the government will provide guarantees to help startups raise debt-capital. As many as 3,600 startups operate in the health sector, while nearly 1,700 startups are present in the agriculture sector, the PM said, emphasising that these startups are changing the “demographic characteristics of businesses”. “The biggest USP of the startup world is its disruption and diversification capacity.”

Ninjacart, India’s largest B2B fresh produce supply chain company furthered its vision of, ‘Safe food for billion people’ with its first set of Residue-Free Tomatoes, produced in partnership with agri-tech platform Kilofarms.

This batch has been tested and cleared by Shiram Institute for Industrial Research, Bangalore, and also meets the 2013-14 National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) testing list criteria in order to be safely tagged as residue-free consumable produce. While organic food production has been given more emphasis till now, the input costs are quite high and are not economical or scalable for farmers. Ninjacart and Kilofarms have leveraged each other's strengths to devise tech-enabled methods such as automated drip irrigation to assist farmers in achieving the finest grade of fresh produce through Residue-Free methods.

This technology will help farmers with moisture sensors that give a predictive estimate of the water content of the soil as it influences the yield of the crop. It helps reduce the amount of water used in the field by telling the farmers which part of the field has less water, thereby bringing more efficiency to the entire process with minimal wastage.

Riding on higher planting of pulses and oilseeds, the crop area has gone up by 2.61% from last year. Area sown to wheat, the main rabi crop, has also increased by 2.53% to 33.54 million hectares so far in the ongoing 2020-21 rabi season from 32.67 million hectares in the year-ago period, according to the agriculture ministry. There is significant rise in pulses and oilseeds area indicating a bumper crop this year. The pulses area has gone up by 4.52% while oilseeds area, mainly mustard is up by 5.15%. This is likely to reduce our dependence on imports,” said a senior agriculture ministry official. In Punjab, where there is maximum protest, sowing of wheat is almost completed covering over 3.5 million hectare.“Availability of water for irrigation has resulted in rise in area of rice, which is up by 2.69% from last year. Till last week, sowing of rice had lagged as compared to last year. But rains helped farmers expand rice area. However, area of rice is still down by 55% as compared to normal sowing, which covers 4.17 million hectares during this period,” the official said.Meanwhile, the government has also scaled up procurement exercise for its central pool purchasing more than 52 million tonnes of paddy, which is 27% more than last year during this period. Punjab alone contributed close to 39% of the total procurement so far.

“The government has transferred around Rs one lakh crore to over 6.8 million rice farmers against procurement,” the official said.
