Pakistan Supreme Court Orders Imran Khan’s Transfer From Jail to Hospital :
Islamabad, August 18, 2026: In a significant development in Pakistan, the Supreme Court has ordered the government to shift jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical examination and treatment.
The order came after Khan’s lawyers and family members raised concerns about his deteriorating health and sought specialist medical treatment. According to reports, the Supreme Court has directed authorities to arrange his transfer within the next two days.
Khan, 73, has been imprisoned since August 2023 and continues to face several legal cases. His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and family have repeatedly expressed concern over his health, particularly problems affecting his right eye. His lawyers and supporters have argued that he should receive treatment from specialist doctors at a hospital of his choice.
The Supreme Court’s latest intervention is therefore being seen as an important development in the long-running dispute over Khan’s medical care while in prison.
Reports indicate that the court has directed that Khan remain at the hospital until September 16, or until doctors consider him medically fit to return, according to the circumstances of his treatment.
The former Pakistan cricket captain became prime minister in 2018 and remained in office until his government was removed through a no-confidence vote in April 2022. Since then, he has faced a series of criminal and corruption cases, which Khan and his political party have repeatedly described as politically motivated.
Growing Concern Over His Health
Khan’s health has become a major political issue in Pakistan. His family and PTI leaders have particularly highlighted concerns regarding his eyesight. Earlier this year, he received treatment for an eye condition, with his lawyers claiming that he had suffered significant loss of vision in his right eye.
PTI has welcomed the Supreme Court order, viewing the decision to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital as a long-standing demand of his family and legal team.
The development could further intensify political debate in Pakistan, where Imran Khan remains one of the country's most influential and polarising political figures despite being behind bars.
For now, attention is focused on his transfer to the Islamabad hospital and the medical assessment that will determine the next course of treatment.
The Supreme Court order marks a significant moment in Imran Khan’s prolonged legal and political battle — bringing his health and prison conditions once again to the centre of Pakistan’s political debate.
