ADP MUMTAZ OF UDUPI APPOINTED DISTRICT JUDGE, BECOMES FIRST MUSLIM WOMAN MAGISTRATE IN KARNATAKA

Udupi's Assistant Director of Prosecution (ADP) Mumtaz has been appointed as the district judge, making her the first Muslim woman in Karnataka to become a district magistrate. Mumtaz secured the first rank in the judicial exams held in Feb-March earlier this year. She is among the 12 among people who got selected to become district judges. Mumtaz completed her LLB degree from SDM Law College in Mangaluru before moving to Mysuru for master's degree. Mamtaz was selected as the assistant public prosecutor in the JMFC court of Bhatkal in 2010. Later, she was shifted to Udupi JMFC. In 2018, Mamtaz got promoted as ADP to the district SP office of Udupi.

IS INDIA'S DEMOCRACY IN JAIL. ASKS STORY OF QAYYUM WHO WAS IMPRISONED FOR 11 YEARS IN FALSE TERROR CASE

M***i Abdul Qayyum was wrongly implicated in the Akshardham Temple attack case in 2002 and spent 11 years in jail for a crime he did not commit. Irfan Ahmad and Md Zakaria Siddiqui in their paper "Democracy in Jail" in the Economic and Political Weekly Vol 52, Issue No 44, look at prison as an understudied subject in anthropology. The paper looks at Qayyum's prison memoir-" Gyarah Saal Salaakhon Ke Peeche (Eleven Years Behind Bars)"- to explore an alternative democracy that manifests in prisons. We reproduce parts of the paper here: The Gujarat police "abducted" Qayyum on 17 August 2003. He was taken to the crime branch and brought into the office of Dahyabhai Gobarji Vanzara, Director-General of Police, Gujarat. On Qayyum's refusal to confess about his supposed involvement in the Akshardham case, Vanzara ordered a stump-wielding team to beat him.

TOKYO OLYMPICS, EQUESTRIAN: INDIA'S FOUAAD MIRZA, SEIGNEUR MEDICOTT FINISH MAIDEN GAMES IN 23RD PLACE

Earlier in the day, Indian equestrian rider Fouaad Mirza and Seigneur Medicott finished 25th in the qualifying rounds to make it to the medal round of equestrian eventing at the Tokyo Olympics. India's Fouaad Mirza and Seigneur Medicott ended their journey at the Tokyo Olympics in 23rd position after the final round of show jumping on Monday. Earlier, the duo qualified for the final of individual eventing after finishing in the top 25 after scoring 8.00 penalty points in the first round of jumping. Scores for the final round included penalties incurred in the qualifying rounds too. Mirza, who came in with an aggregate of 47.20 points from the three stages of eventing did not stand a chance of making the podium. It is an encouraging finish for the rider and horse who are both making their Olympic debuts. This pair also won India two silver medals at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

INDIAN-AMERICAN RASHAD HUSSAIN BECOMES FIRST MUSLIM TO BE NOMINATED AS AMBASSADOR FOR INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

In a first, Indian-American Rashad Hussain was nominated by US President Joe Biden as the Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. If approved by the Senate he will be the first Muslim to head US diplomacy for advancing religious liberties. 41-year-old Rashad Hussain is Director for Partnerships and Global Engagement at the National Security Council. He previously served as Senior Counsel at the Department of Justice's National Security Division, said a White House statement. During the Obama Administration, Rashad served as US Special Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications, and Deputy Associate White House Counsel.

MUSLIMS OFFER 1700 SQFT LAND ADJACENT TO GYANVAPI MOSQUE FOR KASHI VISHWANATH TEMPLE CORRIDOR

The Muslim side at Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi has handed over a piece of land adjacent to the mosque to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust, in return for which the temple administration has given them 1000 sqft of land at a different place. This land is however different from the disputed one, the matter of which is currently in court. The land given by the mosque to the trust was initially given to the mosque officials on a perpetual lease to build a police control room, in the wake of the demolition of the Babri Masjid, The Indian Express reported. The temple administration had asked for the land for the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, after which the Muslim side unanimously decided to give the land.

A MUSLIM CLERIC WAS ATTACKED BY A HINDU MONK

A Muslim cleric was attacked by a Hindu monk at Dausa railway station last night allegedly after seeing his beard and Muslim appearance. Two other people who arrived to save him were also attacked with sticks. The cleric has suffered a serious head injury and has been referred from the district hospital to Jaipur after first aid. After getting information Kotwali police and GRP took the sadhu into custody. Investigation is being done by registering an offense against the accused Manish Kumar alias Ram Manohar at GRP police station Bandikui in case number 22/2021 dated 17/07/2021 section 323,341,308 IPC.

PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING REUTERS PHOTOJOURNALIST DANISH SIDDIQUI KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN

Reuters India chief photographer Danish Siddiqui was killed in Afghanistan while covering clashes in Spin Boldak district in Kandahar. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist had been covering the situation in Kandahar over the last few days, Afghan news channel TOLOnews reported. In 2018, Siddiqui and his colleague Adnan Abidi became the first Indians to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for documenting the Rohingya refugee crisis.
