Midlife is a time that can shake us up. It makes a lot of demands; physically, emotionally, and mentally. And the one place where we start to take care of selves and heal is through introspection. Even to be able to seek support, we should know ourselves first to be able to seek the right kind of support. Here is an article that lists a few introspective questions that can bring clarity and help you in dealing with your kind of midlife crisis: https://sarasmeaton.com/clarifying-questions-midlife/ (link in bio)

Do you hold any idea or interest that you have not yet embarked on? That you have left for later and that later never comes by?

Mark Zuckerberg was 19 when he started Facebook. And Bill Gates got Microsoft off the ground when he was 23. High achievers in sports train from young to become a world #1.

Their well-known stories might seem to suggest that success comes to those who start early.

But the data on successful entrepreneurs says otherwise: The average age of business founders is around 40 years old, according to research by Pierre Azoulay, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Number of athletes in the senior category are only increasing. And manyare breaking the glass ceiling on what all one can do at older age.

Here we share some stories of those who started old and found success. Stories that you can resonate - It is never too late. What do you think!?

What journey would you choose to embark on for yourself?

What on earth does aging gracefully mean? It is often associated with "looking" young no matter the number of candles you put out. Why? Social constructs have conditioned us to believe that is true. While admiring people who look great in their 60s-70s-80s is understandable. But associating only looks to ageing gracefully is not. It is an unnecessary pressure to focus on vanity all our lives. Ageing gracefully is instead, leading life with courage, bravery and vulnerability at any age. It is, choosing to make those decisions that you think will enable you to lead an active and healthy lifestyle through every decade of your adult life. What's in a decade? It is all about becoming who we want to be. And that can change and evolve with every passing year.

Don't take our word for it. We asked a few on what graceful ageing means to them. Slide right to find their answers.

VAIN AM I? SERIES:

Geri, 61, is a brand consultant and creative living in Philadelphia

I love looking at striking things. I’m taken by beauty. I think humans are a form of performance art. I’ve always worn myself on the outside. People can recognize the kind of person I am by looking at me. I’ve always had some sense of self. When I think back to a certain age, I’ll remember wearing something that half my family hated, but I saw the romance in. These days I will go the closet and throw something on. The oddest, craziest, quirkiest, most wonderful thing I can think of—because it’s mood. It’s expression. It’s my subconscious, guiding me.

VAIN AM I? SERIES

Manju Mittal, Age 66 is a Home Maker, Avid Reader, Interior Designer living in Mumbai

"Vanity doesn’t or shouldn’t vanish with age. By I say in a positive way. As per ur age dress up, wear that lipstick, perfume and step out. If that’s what you want. I consider it as part of healthand deportment. An anti depressant. is not necessarily for giving up life even before u r dead. It’s your ME TIME. YOU ARE ENTITLED TO IT. It’s part of ongoing self realisation, both physically and mentally. You still are living and learning new things everyday. You go only with your last breath. Till then live it up. As you want!"

VAIN AM I? SERIES:

Chitra Vasudev, Age 72 is a retired bank officer living in Bangalore

Growing up and as an adult, the only effort I put into my appearance was the matching glass bangles with every outfit I had. I never wore makeup, except a kohl pencil which I stopped using soon. I never thought about my skin or taking care of it with the plethora of products that flood the market. Even now, I go out with my friends and the idea of dressing up is to wear a beautiful saree with a story behind it. Usually, it is "My daughter brought this for me". I think about the things I would have missed if it wasn't for the on my face that prove I am here.

There, I said it - you know that-that shouldn't be said out loud. Or at least that's the vibe I get. Once we join the rat race, we focus too much on life stones - only until retirement. Not what happens after retirement. Is that healthy? Pause... to think about it.

Finally.... the third step to save 50% of your earnings is....
- self control
- say no to indulgences
- smart buying, smart living

call it what you want, but follow that.

Most our desires is fed by mere availability. Always no because we need it. We are constantly cue to desire it, and we give in.

Instead practice to resist the cues. Distract your desire. Ground to your ethics & values of saving 50%.

You find a fantastic shirt one month, fab skirt another months, leather jacket a 3rd month, cool sunglasses - your second sunglasses at that, on the 4th month, a fabric print that you cannot not buy on the 5th month & so on and so forth.

You think you have worked hard and deserve to eat out - say you have these moments 2-3 times a week.

Like this you continue to buy small things - things that you may not need, but want.

Reflect on your past year bills: how much have you cumulatively spent on food? On clothing? On home decor? Are you comfortable with that lump sum spent on things you WANTED, not NEEDED?

The aim is to , for now and for future (3 decades later). Not necessarily at the cost of your lifestyle now. But by making choices based on needs and not desires.

That's step #2 that would help you in 50% of your earnings.
Lookout for the last step #3 in the next post.

What is long-term is subjective to each. For some 5 years is long-term, and for some it is 15 years or more.

In the context of and retirement, longterm is the age - the number at which you desire to retire or you anticipate cash inflow dwindling and expense beyond inflow - with particular focus on older age.

The first step to save 50% of your earnings is to think long-term. Meaning, reflexively ponder about the transition in your lifestyle from now to when you would retire to after retirement. Just like how as children and teens, in our eagerness to grow up we ponder about our 20s and 30s...

In our 20s, 30s or even 60s, we need to start pondering about our financial needs, opportunities and necessities for about 2-3 decades beyond our current age.

This just the first step. Steps 2&3 on next posts.

Brain Exercise 2: Try something new or build on something you already know

**This is our series on protecting brain health to delay the decline of cognitive functions as we age.**

Today we bring you an inspiring story of , the 61-year-old woman who rides the glassy blue waves and harnesses its energy as an avid surfer. She learnt to surf when she was 14 and at 18 she took it up full time. She didn't surf for decades because of a personal accident and turmoil in her life. "I have always loved surfing", she says "And I got right back into it". Her age didn't stop her and she built on something she loved.

It is hard for us to know what we are passionate about and what we love. Some people spend their entire life trying to find it or pursue it. If we tell ourselves there is no age to start doing it, we will. Pick up something you like doing, or you were doing when you were younger, and build on it. It doesn't have to be socially approved or reasoned logically. It just has to give us joy, meaning and purpose. Follow your heart. If not now, then when!?

FIRE — an acronym for Financial Independence, Retire Early, is a movement by a few planning to . Wherein they follow extreme savings and investments (upto 70% of earnings).

Naren and Sugandha are a part of this tribe. The fact is, for Indians early retirement is hard. In a 2017 global index of 43 countries which took into account factors like saving avenues, healthcare etc, India ranked the lowest. The silver lining though is that a lot of Indians are still able to do it. Here is an example:

Even before they got married, Naren and Sugandha were on the same page to retire early. They started early by saving 50% of their income and cut back on costs such as eating out frequently, having a second car etc. They have also moved to Goa to cut costs. Unlike their parents who invested in real estate, Naren and Sugandha prioritised personal freedom and career mobility, and focussed on inflation beating with capital investments and liquid assets.

There are many more strategies under FIRE, read them here: [https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/financial-independence-retire-early-fire.asp #:~:text=Financial Independence%2C Retire Early (FIRE) is a financial movement, withdrawals from their accumulated funds](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/financial-independence-retire-early-fire.asp #:~:text=Financial%20Independence%2C%20Retire%20Early%20(FIRE)%20is%20a%20financial%20movement,withdrawals%20from%20their%20accumulated%20funds).

Answer in the comments, if you were FIRE your shot now, when would/could you retire?
