India’s Pharma Independence: Powering Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Healthcare

India’s pharma independence has evolved from heavy import dependence in 1947 into a global manufacturing strength. Today, India ranks as the third-largest pharmaceutical producer by volume, supplies 20% of global generic medicines and contributes around 60% of global vaccine supplies.

Nikkhil K Masurkar, CEO, ENTOD Pharma, says India’s next phase should position the country as an “innovation partner and healthcare leader” for emerging economies.

Dr P. D. Vaghela, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, highlights how India’s COVID-19 response strengthened its reputation as the “Pharmacy of the World.”

With $30.5 billion in pharma exports in FY25, ₹4,763.34 crore invested under the Bulk Drugs PLI scheme and 55,100 tonnes of annual capacity established across 26 critical APIs and KSMs, India is building greater supply-chain resilience.

Bhanu Prakash Kalmath S J, Partner and Healthcare Industry Leader, Grant Thornton Bharat, points to the sector’s growing shift toward specialty portfolios and differentiated capabilities.

The next chapter will depend on biosimilars, complex generics, novel therapies, AI-driven R&D and drug discovery.
