The Anti-trafficking Bill will be sent to the Cabinet for approval and then tabled in the Parliament after taking into account suggestions and commendations.
Some changes are as follows:
Punishments and imprisonment tenures become more stringent, depending on the intensity of the crime. Any offense of trafficking in person will be punished with not less than seven years of imprisonment, a possible extension till ten years and a fine of at least a lakh rupees. ‘Aggravated offences’ which include death of the victim, organ damage or removal, child victims, etc. can be punished with an imprisonment term of ten years, with possibility of extending it for lifetime and fine over ten lakh rupees. On basis of barbarity of the crime, death penalty can also be sentenced.
The Bill also seeks to broaden the range of offenders by bringing public servants and army personnel under its ambit. Crimes with cross-border implications will also be considered under the scope of this Bill. Provisions have been set for the forfeiture of any property that has been purchased via trafficking income.
