International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. She made many reforms to nursing and health care and drastically cut the death rate amongst soldiers in the Crimean War as a result of her hard work, dedication and training of fellow nurses.

It was she who made many radical improvements in the field of nursing and taught other nurses how to serve the people. However, the interesting story of Nurses’ Day witnessed a major change in 1999 when nurses and public sector workers union known as UNISON demanded a change in Nurses’ Day. Their argument was based on changes taking place in nursing field. They vehemently demanded removal of nurse’s week and asked for a new date in recognition of multicultural character of modern day nursing.

But May 12 remained as Nurses’ Day and since then world has celebrated this event every year. Several events and activities are organized on this day. Educational program are carried out to educate public about health care events and aids provided by the nurses. Nurses’ week starts on 6th of May. Day care centers, nursing home and hospitals run major campaign during this period. The true spirit of nursing is celebrated during this phase.

Communal events including city statements, seminars, educational campaigns etc are some of the major activities taking place during the Nurses week. Nurses are acknowledged for their great works. Their contributions in the field of medical science cannot be neglected. They have remained a strong pillar for healthcare system. Nurses put real hard work in all kind of locations. It is rather fitting that world celebrates International Nurses Day as a token acknowledgement of their continued works for the development of healthcare organizations around the globe. The day truly elevates the profile of this vocation in a diversity of customs.

Narada Jayanti (Vaishakha Krishna Dvitiya) is observed on the day after Purnima in Vaishakha. Deva Rishi Narada, also known as Narada Muni is one of the Prajapatis and also one of the 7 great Rishis. Some of the hymns in Rig Veda are credited to Narada Maharishi. For majority Hindus, Sage Narada is the Veena holding Sanyasi who is often known to create trouble with a positive intention or for the betterment of the universe. Narada, who travels across three worlds, is also well-known personality in puranas.

It is believed that Sage Narada appeared from the forehead of Lord Brahma. Some Puranas like the Vishnu Purana suggest he is the son of Sage Kashyapa. In Swayumbuva Manvantara, he is described as Manasa Putra of Lord Brahma, while in Vyvasvata

National Technology Day is celebrated across India on May 11; to commemorate the anniversary of Shakti, the Pokhran nuclear test held on 11 May 1998 (the first of the five tests that were carried out). The day glorifies the importance of science in day to day life and motivates students to adopt science as the career option.

On 11 May 1998, Operation Shakti (Pokhran-II) was initiated with the detonation of one fusion and three fission bombs. Pokhran-II refers to the series of five nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by India at the Indian Army's Pokhran Test Range in 1998. It was the second nuclear test since the first test, code-named Smiling Buddha, had been conducted in May 1974. On 13 May 1998, two additional fission devices were detonated, and the Indian government led by prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee shortly convened a press conference to declarE India a full-fledged nuclear state.

Several events are organised in various engineering colleges and technical institutes to mark the occasion - Lectures, competitions, quizzes, presentations and interactive sessions on different aspects of science are organized. The day is important for scientists, engineers, planners and all others engaged in governance and nation building. Companies and individuals are awarded with National Technology Awards for adopting new technologies by the president of India. The ministry of science and technology coordinate different events.

" He got out of the castle against his father's orders. He saw the "Four Passing Sights": an old crippled man, a sick man, a dead man, and a holy man with no home. Right then, Gautama knew that nothing can stop people from being born, becoming old, getting sick, and dying. He decided to give up his worldly life. He would not keep his wives, his children, his wealth, or his palace. He would become a holy man with no home. He would look for the answer to the problem of birth, old age, sickness, and death. He left his home in the middle of a dark and stormy night."

Narasimha is the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu depicted as a ‘man-lion’ or ‘half man - half lion’. Lord Vishnu took the Narasimha avatara to end the tyranny of Hiranyakashipu and restore the path of Dharma. Prahlada the young son of Hiranyakashipu and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu paved the way for the removal of Adharma. Narasimha Kshetras in Karnataka are the best places to visit during this festival. Some of the temples celebrating it with great pomp are:
* Guru Narasimha Swamy Temple at Saligrama, Udupi
* Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple at Roopena Agrahara,
Hosur Main Road, Bangalore
* Yoga Narasimha, Melkote
* Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, Malleswaram, Bangalore

You can find the entire list of temples, and the ones closest to your location here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narasimha

LEGEND ~ According to Puranas, Demon Hiranyakasipu obtained a boon from Brahma that he could not be killed by man or beast, by day or by night and from inside or outside nor any weapon. After receiving such a powerful boon, Hiranyakasipu conquered the heavens and the earth and declared himself as God and asked people to worship him and not Vishnu. But Hiranyakasipu’s son, Prahlāda, was a staunch Vishnu devotee. So while the whole kingdom worshipped Hiranyakasipu; his son worshipped Vishnu. After several failed attempts to change his son, he tried to kill him, but each time the young boy escaped from the clutches of death with the blessings of Vishnu. Fed up with his son, one day Hiranyakasipu challenged Prahlada and, looking to a stone pillar, asked, ‘If your god is omnipresent, is he in this pillar too?’ Prahlad answered, ‘HE is present in the pillar and even in the rust.’ Hearing this Hiranyakasipu slashed hard on the pillar with a sword. Suddenly, Lord Vishnu emerged from the pillar in the form of a Narasimha and slew the demon at dusk. Narasimha killed the demon by placing him in his lap and tearing his heart with bare hands thus overcoming all the boons the demon had attained from Brahma.

Devotees fast on this day from Sunrise to the nest Sunrise. People visit temples of Lord Vishnu. Prayers dedicated to Narasimha are chanted on the day. Chanting prayers of the avatar of Narasimha in the Bhagavad Purana is considered meritorius. People also give alms on the day and perform Annadhanam (donate food to poor) which is also considered good. It is believed that those people who observe Narasimha Jayanti vratha will reach the ‘Vaikunta’ – abode of Vishnu. Jaggery and gram sprouts are offered to the deity on this day.

Swāmī Brahmānanda Saraswatī (1868 – 1953) was knowns as the Shankaracharya of the Jyotir Math monastery in India.Born into a Brahmin family he left home at the age of 9 in search of a spiritual master. At age 14 he became a disciple of Swami Krishnānanda Saraswati. At the age of 34 he was initiated into the order of "Sanyas" and became the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math in 1941 at age 70. The swami is said to have been one of those "rare siddhas (accomplished ones) who had the knowledge of Sri Vidya and who was "modeled" after the great philosopher Adi Shankara. Within a decade of becoming Shankaracharya he accumulated many thousands of disciples and reinforced the concept of the Jyotir Math monastery as an important centre for Advaita philosophy.
