Novo Signs $1.3B Nanexa Deal for Long-Acting Obesity Drugs

Novo Nordisk is expanding its focus on next-generation drug delivery with a global licensing and collaboration agreement with Swedish drug-delivery company Nanexa valued at up to €1.165 billion ($1.33 billion). The deal brings Nanexa’s PharmaShell technology into Novo’s pipeline for long-acting injectable treatments targeting obesity, type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases.

This article explores how the partnership aims to develop injectable formulations with longer dosing intervals. Under the agreement, Novo receives exclusive global rights to use Nanexa’s atomic layer deposition-based PharmaShell platform across up to five development programmes, with monthly and quarterly administration among the targeted profiles.

Nanexa’s technology uses an ultra-thin inorganic coating around drug particles to create a controlled-release depot following injection. The companies expect the approach to support longer-acting medicines, potentially reducing injection frequency for patients managing chronic conditions. Novo leads global development and commercialisation, while Nanexa is eligible for up to €615 million in upfront and development and regulatory milestone payments, alongside additional sales milestones and low single-digit royalties on future product sales.

A timely read for pharmaceutical leaders, biotech companies, healthcare investors, drug-delivery innovators, researchers and technology professionals tracking long-acting therapeutics, obesity treatment, controlled-release drug platforms and the evolving convergence of biotechnology and advanced materials science.
