We are eagerly awaiting arrival of ‘Grandpa’s Ocean’ copies this week! We want to tell our young readers what this book - with meaningful words by Arielle North Olson and beautiful hand illustrations by Sarah Khoury - is all about.

A young boy shares his grandpa’s fascination with the ocean and all the creatures it nourishes. They both delight in beach walks and in their love for one another. Grandpa’s dog, Lass, is their joyous companion.

As young readers mature, they will realize that this beautiful ocean is worth protecting, for themselves and for generations to come.

Around the world, children know that their futures are tied to the future of our planet. Some march to bring attention to climate change. Some are refusing to use plastic straws and plastic bags. They don’t want the ocean to be as full of plastic as fish by 2050.

Their interest in protecting the environment is our best hope for the future.

Words by Arielle North Olson, Art by Sarah Khoury. GRANDPA’S OCEAN - the upcoming addition to our children’s book catalogue.

Grandpa and grandson are intrigued by the wonders of the ocean. Sarah Khoury has beautifully hand-illustrated this very special love between generations. Her illustration technique involves many layers of a mix of acrylic paints and coloured pencils on rough heavy paper.

A graduate of the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, Sarah is an Italian illustrator and author based in Antibes, France.

My husband, Ole, and I are very lucky. We have a house perched on a hillside 500 feet above the beach. We are fascinated with the many moods of the ocean, the stunning sunsets, the barking of Stellar sea lions, the tang of salt air and all the creatures who inhabit the shore.

We never tire of exploring the ocean. We enjoy sea spray blowing against our faces, and incoming waves lapping at our boots. Beach walks are exhilarating, especially when we are accompanied by children and grandchildren. They, too, are fascinated with the ocean and are well aware that we must protect it — from pollution, plastic debris and man-made climate change.

The ocean is a treasure that sustains us all.

Arielle North Olson Photo 1 - The Grandpa who inspired “Grandpa’s Ocean” explores the beach as the early morning sun highlights the sky above.

Photo 2 - In “Grandpa’s Ocean” pools like these are found by grandfather and grandson when the tide is low. On nearby rocks they see starfish and sea anemones, creatures hidden beneath the waves when the tide is high.

Photo 3 - Grandpa and grandson have fun on a beach like this in “Grandpa’s Ocean”. They collect rocks, fly kites, watch for whales and play with Grandpa’s dog, Lass.

Photo 4 - The author of “Grandpa’s Ocean” and her husband are beachcombers, looking for whatever the waves wash in - sea shells, sand dollars, pretty agates, and that rare, rare find, a fisherman’s glass float.

Ma.
A unique name.
A universal name.
A name that expresses love, tenderness, care, hope, dreams, strength, and much more.
There are as many mothers as there are children.
Mothers are human too like anyone else.
Motherhood is also about vulnerability, insecurities, fears, lack, absence, and loss.

With each animal having their own alliterative occupation, this playful alphabet book takes children beyond learning their letters.

An alligator takes up the role of an astronaut, while a bear bakes, an eagle explores and a fox fights fires. Not to mention the lion librarian, postman panda and yoga-teaching yak…

With perfectly-scanning verse and bright, engaging illustrations on each page, this is a book that will appeal to designers, artists and parents as much as it entertains and instructs young readers.

Monica loves to paint, and she has painted everything! Red ladybirds, blue skies, yellow bananas . . . but she has never painted a kiss. What colour is a kiss? Red like tomato sauce? Green like a crocodile? Yellow like sunflowers? No. No. No. How will she find out?

Vir had always wanted to fly. He watched how birds took off and moved through the air. He made wings. He asked for help. He tried everything! But he was still on the ground. One day his mother put a book in his hands and told him there were other ways to fly. At first he didn’t know what she meant, but soon realizes she was right!

A little girl and her brother are blue when summer vacation is over. The family drives away from the ocean but once they’re home, she realizes her shoes are still full of the grains of golden sand. “I don’t want to throw them away ... I know, let’s plant them!” the little siblings perk up while imagining what might grow. A bright yellow pinwheel forest? A crop of citron ice cream cones?

Delightful illustrations depict the possibilities that spring from their fertile imaginations, which keep them busy until it’s time for bed, when they think about next year’s trip to the sea.

Everyone cries sometimes. Maybe a few tears, or maybe a lot. It doesn’t matter whether you’re big or small, for when you are sad, scared, or hurt it’s sometimes just too much ... and then we cry. It’s one way to let those feelings out. It’s a good time to think. And maybe to talk with someone and have a hug.

The gentle discussion and dreamy illustrations are soothing and confirm that being overwhelmed by emotion is a normal part of life, and one important way we learn and grow.
