The student was pursuing MTech in the Department of Computer Science and Automation (CSA). He had been staying at the institute’s Krithika hostel since August 3, when the new academic session for postgraduate programmes began.

The IISc administration did not respond to HT’s queries seeking comment.

In a condolence message to the IISc community, registrar Prof D Nagesh Kumar said the institute was “extremely saddened” by the student’s death on August 20 and expressed condolences to his family and friends.

“We are committed to ensuring that the IISc campus is a safe and inclusive space for everyone,” Kumar said, while urging students and other members of the campus community experiencing emotional distress to use the mental health support services available through the institute’s Wellness Centre.

These include a 24×7 emergency counselling helpline, online counselling, and consultations with counsellors and psychiatrists, the registrar said.

A spokesperson for Sadashivanagar police station said a UDR (Unnatural Death Report) had been registered. “We have sent the body for post-mortem and informed the family. Further investigation is underway,” the spokesperson said on Friday.

The latest incident comes 15 days after the death of 19-year-old, a second-year BTech student, who allegedly died by su***de in his hostel room on August 6. He was a resident of Karnataka’s Chikkaballapura district.

The Karnataka government on Friday launched KEO (Knowledge-driven, Economical and Open-source) an AI ready computing device with the democratising access to advanced technologies.

KEO was developed through a collaboration between the Department of Electronics, IT and Biotechnology, Government of Karnataka, KEONICS, semiconductor partners and AI-focused system integrators, KEO brings together an open-source RISC-V processor architecture, open-source hardware and software, and on-device artificial intelligence in a compact desktop platform.

According to the Karnataka government, KEO was built around the idea that advanced computing should be accessible not only to those with high-end devices and reliable connectivity, but to people across geographies and income levels.

KEO incorporates a dedicated on-device AI accelerator, enabling AI applications to run locally. This makes it particularly relevant for communities and institutions operating in areas where connectivity may be inconsistent.

At the launch of KEO, Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said, “KEO represents Karnataka’s vision of taking technology beyond innovation hubs and into the hands of people. We have built a strong ecosystem in semiconductors, electronics, deep technology and artificial intelligence, and the next step is to ensure that these capabilities translate into real benefits for our citizens.”

“KEO is a Made-in-Karnataka platform that brings AI-ready computing closer to students, entrepreneurs, farmers, small businesses and institutions, including those in areas where connectivity may be limited,” the chief minister said.

As part of the launch, 3,000 KEO devices will be rolled out. The government of Karnataka plans to scale up deployments significantly in the coming months, taking KEO into more schools, institutions, businesses, households and citizen-facing environments across the state.

The launch will also mark the announcement of KEO Lite and KEO Pro, expanding the KEO portfolio to address different computing requirements and user segments.

The participants said that they are planning a larger protest at Freedom Park against the Tunnel Road project.

After forming two human chains at Lalbagh to protest the proposed tunnel road project, citizens and walkers on Sunday hugged the peninsular gneiss rock inside the park to register their opposition to the project.

The protest, led by the Lalbagh Walkers Association, highlighted what participants described as the potentially irreversible impact of the tunnel project on Bengaluru’s green cover, geological heritage and biodiversity.

The organisers said they were denied police permission to hold a protest inside the park this time and therefore chose to silently hug the ancient rock as a mark of protest. The protesters said the ancient Lalbagh rock, a geological formation dating back millions of years, could be vulnerable to damage from blasting and excavation associated with tunnel construction.

“Lalbagh is not just a park. It is the lungs and history of Bengaluru. Destroying millions of years of geological history and centuries of botanical heritage for concrete infrastructure is unacceptable. We demand that the entire Tunnel Road project be scrapped immediately to protect our environment,” said S Umesh, president of the Lalbagh Walkers Association.

Environment activist Dattatraya T Devare said, “The proposed Tunnel Road project between Hebbal and Silk Board, the short tunnel between Hebbal and Veterinary College, nine elevated corridors and the metro double-decker projects would permanently damage the environment. No detailed studies have been conducted by experts on these projects, and the consequences of these projects cannot be predicted.”

The participants said they are planning a larger protest at Freedom Park against the Tunnel Road project.
