French Election Could Test NATO Unity as Le Pen and Mélenchon Challenge the Alliance’s Military Role

With Europe reassessing its defenses and Russia still looming, France’s next presidential race could reshape one of NATO’s most important military relationships.

As reported by politico.eu.

NATO is preparing for a real risk: France’s next president could deal a serious blow to the Alliance’s unity.

Amid doubts about Washington’s willingness to continue guaranteeing Europe’s defense and increased military preparedness in response to possible Russian aggression, French opinion polls are showing a worrying trend. Approximately half of voters are prepared to support candidates with hard-line views and a critical attitude toward NATO in the upcoming presidential election.

French candidates who oppose NATO’s current role
Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally party supports France’s withdrawal from the Alliance’s integrated military command. Such a move would not formally end the country’s NATO membership, but it would significantly weaken its participation in joint military planning.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who represents the left-wing political camp, has said he wants France to withdraw from NATO entirely.

For the Alliance, this creates an additional threat at a time when European countries are seeking to strengthen their own defenses, while Russia remains a potential source of large-scale military danger. A victory by a candidate opposed to deeper cooperation with NATO could call France’s role in European security into question and complicate the allies’ ability to mount a joint response to possible challenges.

Two officers killed in a car crash near Middlesbrough this morning, which also killed five others, have been named by Cleveland Police

Chief Constable Victoria Fuller says PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough "were brave officers protecting our communities"

The occupants of the other vehicle were all males in their late teens, the BBC understands

The collision happened on the A66 in South Bank, near Middlesbrough on Teesside, shortly after 03:30 BST on Saturday when a car travelling the wrong way collided with a marked police vehicle

Prime Minister Andy Burnham says he is "devastated" to hear about the crash, and thanks emergency services

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp also offers his condolences, saying the police watchdog, the IOPC, "must be given the time and space to complete their investigations without speculation"

BBC DJ and presenter Trevor Nelson has revealed he stepped away from work after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Nelson was last on air in June and had announced he was "taking a little break from my work commitments" due to "health issues".

Speaking to his Instagram followers, the 62-year-old said that his "world was turned upside down" when a brain tumour was discovered.

He said that he had undergone a "very serious surgery" which "went incredibly well".

Speaking on Instagram on Thursday, Nelson explained: "There's been a lot of speculation as to what's wrong with me, I know that much. My phone's blown up 20 times over with people asking what's wrong with me.

"I felt that I should at least tell you what was wrong with me. I'm not going to go into it all now and I will deep dive into it at a later date so you can hear the full story."

He continued: "I'll tell you this, I was minding my own business and then it was discovered I had a brain tumour.

"I was shocked, my world was turned upside down, it was a shock to myself and close family and friends and you can imagine quite literally my head was all over the place."

'Feel great right now'
He reassured fans his surgery went well and last month has "been at home, recuperating, recovering and resting and getting some post-op treatment as well".

Sydney radio host Emma Chow has broken down on air while sharing a devastating family health battle with listeners.

The 41-year-old, who hosts 2DayFM’s breakfast show alongside Nathan Roye, said she is “trying to save my husband’s life” as he battles chronic kidney disease.

Reading from a prepared statement, she said her husband Enzo Lisbona’s illness has progressed to a stage where he needs an organ transplant, and she is trying to be his donor.

“We’ve been undergoing a bunch of tests over the past couple of months, and we’re currently waiting for the one test that shows if I’m a match or not,” she said, breaking down in tears.

“It’s the first time that I might finally be able to physically help him after years of feeling like all I could do was watch him suffer.”

Richard Turere, a young inventor from Kenya, developed Lion Lights after observing that lions were frightened by moving lights at night. By placing blinking LED bulbs around livestock enclosures, he simulated human movement and thereby deterred lions without harming them. His straightforward yet effective invention lowered livestock losses and eased tensions between farmers and wildlife.🫡👏✌️

19/08/2026

The UAE's decision to suspend trade and financial dealings with Iran could mark a major turning point in the Gulf's delicate balancing act. For decades, the UAE has served as one of Iran's most important commercial and financial gateways, helping move billions of dollars in goods through re-exports, traders and logistics networks. Now, amid escalating tensions with the United States, that bridge is under threat. For Iran, the consequences could mean costlier imports, disrupted payments and fewer routes to global markets. For the UAE, the economic fallout may be manageable, but the risk of a wider regional war is far harder to contain.
