KALPA VIGRAHA-World’s Oldest Idol of Lord Shiva?

The Kalpa Vigraha, believed to be one of the oldest known Hindu deity idols, is estimated to be around 26,000 to 28,000 years old. Many consider it the oldest man-made idol of Lord Shiva known to mankind, reportedly dated through radiocarbon testing associated with a California-based research institute. 👍🏼🇮🇳👍🏼

According to historical claims, the Kalpa Vigraha was discovered in Tibet in the 1950s, preserved inside a heavy metal-lined teak wood chest by Buddhist monks. The chest itself was unusual—while the inner storage space measured only about 8 x 8 x 8 inches, the wooden panels used to build its five sides were nearly 8 inches thick each.

Carbon dating is said to suggest the idol may be over 26,450 years old, placing it far earlier than the legendary Kurukshetra War described in the Mahabharata, and leading some to associate it with an era predating the current Yuga cycle.

Srikanteshwara Temple, Located at Nanjangud Also known as Nanjundeshwara Temple, it is Karnataka’s largest temple, located on the banks of the Kapila River. Nanjangud is named after Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Nanjundeshwara, meaning "the God who drank poison".

During the Samudra Manthan, Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison (Halahal) to save the World. Goddess Parvati held his throat, preventing the poison from spreading, turning it blue, giving him the name 'Neelakantha'.

Temple Architecture:

The temple spans 50,000 sq. ft. with a seven-story Mahadwara adorned with gold-plated Kalasas. The courtyard features 122 sculptures, including Shiva, Subramanya, and 32 forms of Ganapathi. It also houses exquisite bronze idols of Shiva, Narayana, and Chandrashekaramurthi.
