On 15 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced free online coaching during his Independence Day address. He spoke from the historic Red Fort, addressing competitive exam aspirants nationwide. Physics Wallah founder Alakh Pandey welcomed this initiative.

Alakh Pandey believes online education remains crucial for remote towns and villages. He emphasised that ex*****on would determine the initiative's actual success.

“I really appreciate Hon'ble Prime Minister's Promise about Free online Coaching for all needy students. I have always believed that online is the only way to make quality education accessible to remote towns and villages. I want to see this happening on ground coz ex*****on is the main part,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

I offer my unconditional support to Govt for this. I don’t want any profits in return. Quality education should be free for every kid of India,” he added.

PM Modi’s announcement comes amid the ongoing nationwide focus on competitive examinations. Medical, engineering and civil service exams remain particularly significant for Gen Z.

During his speech, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the financial burden of coaching classes on families. According to him, parents feel pressured to maintain perceived social prestige.

We have decided to provide free online coaching for various competitive exams for our youth. We have digital public infrastructure, as well as excellent talent and teachers. By leveraging these resources, we are establishing a comprehensive network to provide free coaching to the nation's youth," the prime minister added.

A delivery boy was beaten after a five-minute delay in delivering an order in Meerut. A video showing the delivery boy being assaulted has gone viral on social media.

The viral CCTV footage shows a delivery boy wearing a red shirt arriving at an apartment to deliver an order. A man then comes out of a flat, and the two appear to have an argument after speaking to each other.

In the video, the delivery boy rings the flat's doorbell. The man who comes outside says something to him, following which an argument appears to break out. The man then snatches the delivery boy's mobile phone and starts assaulting him.

The footage shows the man slapping and kicking the delivery boy. During the incident, the delivery agent can be seen asking for his mobile phone back. A woman also comes out of the flat and remains present during the incident.

The footage further shows the delivery boy being taken inside the flat. It is being claimed that the man assaulted him inside the flat as well. After some time, the delivery boy is brought back outside.

The video is reportedly from Ganga Heights apartment in the Bhawanuan police station area of Meerut. The incident took place at around 9:30 pm on August 14, 2026.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday set an ambitious target of having 50 Indian companies feature in the Fortune 500, as he called for Indian businesses to expand their global footprint and compete at the highest level.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, Modi said India’s economic ambitions must go beyond becoming a large domestic market and focus on creating globally competitive companies.

“Our aim should be to have 50 Indian companies in the Fortune 500,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister’s target comes as he outlined a broader vision for India’s next phase of economic growth, with manufacturing, technology, innovation and global trade emerging as key pillars.

Under what PM Modi called “Shakti ki Sapt Dhara”, or seven streams of strength, manufacturing emerged as one of the key areas that India needs to strengthen.

PM Modi said India must increase production while building the entire value chain domestically — from small components and parts to large and complex finished products.

“We need components as well as complete manufacturing, complex products. From design to manufacturing, India must become a trusted centre of the global supply chain,” he said.

He said Indian manufacturers would have to compete with global standards on three key parameters — cost, quality and scale.

The Prime Minister also called on the manufacturing sector to seize the opportunity to expand its presence in global markets rather than focusing only on domestic demand.

India’s push to become a global manufacturing base comes alongside its growing engagement with international markets. Modi said the country has concluded free trade agreements with 40 countries and that the world has started recognising India’s capabilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced free online coaching for competitive exams during his speech on Independence Day from Red Fort. Modi said that coaching classes are a burden on the poor and middle class and that young people need to stay closer to their families.

“The competition surrounding coaching classes has become a huge burden for middle-class families. Every parent feels that if they do not send their child to a coaching centre, they are somehow falling behind or do not belong to a respectable family,” Modi said, adding that the government wants to help people save the thousands of crores of rupees they spend on coaching.

Modi said the youth should be able to stay closer to their families and avoid placing an additional financial burden on them. “Therefore, we have decided to provide free online coaching for various competitive examinations for our youth,” he said, and added, “We have digital public infrastructure, and we have highly talented teachers and educators.”

The government's online coaching move comes weeks after youth-led protests against examination irregularities were held across various parts of the country, with the most prominent one being held at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.'

Stock market losses often lead to a lot of financial pressure on people. In one such case, a former Deloitte IT manager in Hong Kong allegedly took a drastic step to fund his ‘trading addiction’. He allegedly stole 423 company laptops over 17 months and sold them to an electronics recycler.

The money, however, did not help him recover his losses. As reported by the South China Morning Post

Ho Man-kit, 40, told investigators that he had lost all the illegal proceeds through unsuccessful stock trading and remained in debt.

Recently, Ho pleaded guilty to one count of theft at Hong Kong’s District Court. He admitted to taking Lenovo laptops worth HK$1.2 million (around Rs 1.45 crore) between September 2021 and February 2023.

As per the report, the case came to light on February 13, 2023, when an IT engineer noticed that 399 laptops were missing from Deloitte’s office at Cityplaza in Quarry Bay. The engineer, along with an administrative officer, checked live CCTV footage to find out what had happened to the missing devices.

The footage showed Ho, who was supposed to be on leave, trying to sell a box containing 15 laptops to an electronics recycler at around 7.30 pm that day.

The attempted transaction then led to a wider investigation. Two days later, Ho admitted what he had done during a meeting with his supervisor. He surrendered himself to police that afternoon.

Air India will conduct mandatory screening of all its pilots for substances and medications prohibited under prevailing regulations, according to an internal communication seen by news agency Reuters. The airline said the testing, which goes beyond existing regulatory requirements, will begin on Thursday.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of pilot fitness at Air India following the August 4 Phuket-Delhi flight incident, in which the aircraft experienced a sudden altitude variation of about 300 feet during cruise.

The pilot-in-command's initial screening indicated a positive result, prompting a confirmatory test at a designated laboratory, which also came back positive for ma*****na, according to the Civil Aviation Ministry.

Both pilots were subsequently removed from the flying roster pending completion of the investigation and testing process.

The positive test has also prompted the government to look at whether India's existing framework for testing pilots and other flying crew for psychoactive substances needs to be strengthened.

The government has asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to review the dope-testing framework, including testing protocols followed in other countries, and assess whether India's existing system needs to be strengthened or reframed, sources in the Ministry of Civil Aviation told India Today.

Under the current DGCA framework, aviation personnel who test positive for psychoactive substances are referred for a rehabilitation programme. A second positive test can result in suspension of the person's licence for three years, while a third violation can lead to cancellation of the licence.

The next time you board the Lucknow-Delhi Tejas Express, the train may have a slightly different name. For around three months, the popular service is set to be called the ‘Sprite’ Tejas Express, making it the first train in India to officially carry a commercial brand name.

The Lucknow-Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express is operated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). According to railway sources cited by The Hindu, IRCTC has awarded advertising and train-branding rights to Sprite for six months.

The North Eastern Railway has been asked to announce Train 82501/82502 as the ‘Sprite’ Tejas Express from August 19 to November 11, 2026.

The branding deal marks a first for Indian Railways. While companies have advertised on trains and railway properties before, this arrangement will see the train being announced by a commercial brand name at stations.

According to railway officials cited in the report, the ‘Sprite’ Tejas Express will be announced at its originating and en-route stations in both directions.

The branding rights were reportedly awarded through a Letter of Acceptance issued by IRCTC.

The Tejas Express between Lucknow and Delhi was launched in 2019 and was promoted as a premium, modern rail service.

It is fully air-conditioned and offers services such as on-board food and beverages and infotainment. The train has also been used by groups travelling for corporate events, weddings and other occasions.

IRCTC allows passengers to book an entire AC Chair Car coach for group travel. Each coach has 78 seats.

India Post has launched a new drone-based postal service in Assam to improve connectivity and delivery efficiency in remote and difficult-to-reach areas.

The initiative began with the first drone flight carrying Branch Post Office bags, marking a step toward using technology to overcome challenges posed by difficult terrain and slow road connectivity.

The service is being developed in partnership with Skye Air Mobility. India Post plans to operate 40 drone routes in Assam, as part of a larger network of around 150 routes across Assam and Himachal Pradesh.

The initiative aims to make postal deliveries faster and more reliable, particularly for communities located in remote and geographically challenging regions.

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licences of four Domino’s Pizza outlets after finding multiple food safety and hygiene violations during a special inspection drive across the state.

Three of the affected Domino’s outlets are located in Mumbai, while the fourth is in Satara district. The inspections were carried out on August 11 as part of a statewide drive targeting establishments operated by major restaurant chains.

The FDA inspected a total of 104 establishments belonging to brands including Domino’s Pizza, KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks and Monginis. During the drive, operations at two establishments were halted immediately, while 95 improvement notices were issued and five food business licences were suspended with immediate effect.

In Mumbai, the licence of the Domino’s outlet operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd at Vile Parle West was suspended after inspectors found violations of Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.

The FDA flagged deficiencies related to the display of the FSSAI licence, potable water testing, food storage, pest control and hygiene facilities. The outlet was also directed to ensure proper temperature storage and monitoring of frozen and other food products.

Inspectors also found issues with the segregation and disposal of food and non-food items. Repairs were required to the kitchen back door, flooring and chilling room, while measures were ordered to prevent the entry of rodents and other pests.

The FDA further directed the outlet to provide adequate facilities for food preparation, equipment sanitisation and hand-washing and hygiene for food handlers.

Another Domino’s outlet in Borivali West was also found non-compliant, with the inspection report assigning it a 54 per cent compliance score. The FDA cited deficiencies involving food storage, temperature monitoring, food testing, hygiene and pest control.

An employee in India has sparked a discussion online after comparing his workload, pay and work-from-office requirements with those of his US-based colleagues holding the same position. In a Reddit post, the man claimed that although their roles are identical, the working conditions and expectations are significantly different depending on geography.

Explaining the contrast, the employee wrote, "I work with my US counterparts, same position, same role, but the reality on the ground is so different from what a normal eye sees. US folks get to have two projects max. When they get one more, they have the confidence to raise it with their management/project owners, saying that they don't have the bandwidth to take on anything extra. People support them and respect their boundaries and WLB. On top of it, they get paid 3x-4x what I earn in India, all while working remotely. There is no compulsion to come to the office."

He then described what he said was the situation for employees on his India-based team."Now, in India, my team has a norm of three to four projects at the very minimum. Anyone having two is looked upon as if he/she has committed some sort of a crime. Some even have six projects running, and they have to manage all of them. I guess we have stopped treating labourers as humans. Why isn't there equality across the workforce? Why do people treat employees differently based on geographical regions?"
