One of the most poignant images from the Kargil War captures soldiers of 2 Rajputana Rifles offering prayers before advancing towards the fiercely contested Three Pimples feature. Standing on the extreme left is Lt. Vijayant Thapar, who would make the ultimate sacrifice during that operation.
The men fought under unimaginably harsh conditions. Carrying ammunition took precedence over everything else, leaving little room for food or personal comfort.
What sets a soldier apart is the extraordinary ability to put duty above every personal bond. Fathers, sons, husbands, and brothers transform into warriors the moment the nation calls. The expressions on their faces reflect a quiet understanding that some among them may never return, yet none hesitate.
In early 1999, Pakistani Army regulars, posing as militants, occupied strategic heights on the Indian side of the Line of Control in the sector. India responded with Operation Vijay, where young officers, many barely in their twenties led courageous soldiers up near-vertical, exposed mountain slopes under relentless enemy fire. Their courage and determination reclaimed every occupied position.
On 26 July 1999, declared the successful eviction of all Pakistani intruders, marking the end of the Kargil War. The victory, however, came at a profound cost. The nation lost 527 brave soldiers, while 1,363 others were wounded, many sustaining life-altering injuries.
Their sacrifice secured our tomorrow. .
