Heavy to very heavy rainfall alert in Uttarakhand from July 14 onwards

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in nine districts—Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, Champawat—of Uttarakhand between July 14 and 17.

Significantly, the meteorological centre in Dehradun issued an orange coloured "Alert" warning of heavy (64.5mm-115.5mm) to very heavy (115.6-204.4mm) rainfall lashing majority of districts in Uttarakhand during next 72 hours starting from the evening of July 14.

The primary reason behind the expected heavy spell of rainfall is shifting of monsoon trough towards northwards close to foothills of Himalaya, along with the passage of western disturbance over the state.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment for ra**ng minor girl in Uttarakhand

A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday by a special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) court for ra**ng a minor girl in August 2014.

The court, which exclusively deals with the cases of child sexual abuse, also imposed a fine of Rs 50000 on the convict.

According to prosecution, the victim who is 7 years ols, along with her 11-year-old brother, had visited a temple in Sahaspur area on August 17, 2014 to celebrate Janmashtami. Seeing the two kids alone, Ravi Kumar, who used to work in a factory in Selaqui and originally hails from Shamli district r***d the little girl.

Its a shame what our society has come too. There is no fear of law in the eyes of perpetrators of such heinous crime because most of the time they are never caught or dealt with light punishment. Hope such judgement will help deter this crime and and make our society more safe for our kids.

Pithoragarh: After 9-day search, Bastadi villagers finally cremate missing relatives using dummies

The last rites of nine missing villagers of Bastadi village, the worst affected in the cloudburst that lashed Pithoragarh district on July 1, were performed on Saturday by substituting their bodies with dummies.

Rescue officials said they had given up the search for the missing who were presumed dead and buried under the tonnes of rubble that lies scattered in the village.

Accordingly, effigies were made of the nine missing persons -- six adults and three children -- using the locally grown kush grass, and cremation rituals were performed on the banks of the Charma river some distance away from the relief camp at Singhali village where most of the survivors are currently housed.

Cloudburst-hit Pithoragarh villagers rue govt apathy

Rescue and relief works are in full swing post cloudbursts in Pithoragarh. However, people have accused the state government of focusing only on Bastari village and ignoring the surrounding villages that too suffered heavy losses.

Though loss of lives was reported only from Bastari village, people of nearby villages also suffered massive damages to their agricultural land and houses due to landslides.

The situation in Sunakot and Jethigaon is no different as people spend nights in a Sunakot temple.

Residents allege several villages in Munsiyari and Dharchula subdivisions have been cut off from nearby areas as mudslides and landslides have blocked the roads but no concrete steps have been taken to assuage the woes.

Namami Gange projects worth Rs 250 cr launched in Uttarakhand

Holding that "wrong planning" led to the pollution in Ganga, Union minister Uma Bharti today launched 43 projects worth Rs 250 crore under Namami Gange programme in Uttarakhand, saying that the Modi government is taking corrective steps to cleanse the river.

“The Ganga has not been polluted because of untreated water as much as because of wrong planning. Projects being launched under Namami Gange are corrective steps to atone for what has been done over the years to dirty the river,” she said here.

The Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation said that the ambitous scheme of the Centre will not only cleanse the river and maintain its flow, but will also ensure that the Rs 4,000 crore spent on the river under Ganga Action Plan in 29 years since 1985 (till 2014) do not go waste.
