Suranga Wellalage, the father of Sri Lankan national team cricketer Dunith Wellalage, has passed away at the age of 54.

Suranga Wellalage, who was a former cricketer himself, has reportedly died following a sudden heart attack.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder’s father had passed away on September 18, the same day his son featured in the Asia Cup Group B match against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.

Dunith, 22, received the tragic news only after the match had ended, which Sri Lanka won by six wickets to progress unbeaten to the Super Four stage.

Wellalage departed early this morning from Abu Dhabi, accompanied by team manager Mahinda Halangoda, according to reports.

The heartbreaking news reached Wellalage inside the dressing room. Initially informed of a medical emergency at home, he was soon told of his father’s passing, reports said.

Head Coach Sanath Jayasuriya, visibly emotional upon hearing the news, was seen in tears and later spent time comforting the young all-rounder

Shaheen Sports Lalpora Crowned the Champions of North Kashmir in KNKPL-2025

Lolab 18 Sep 2025: The first inter district cricket championship held in Lolab, found its champions in Lolab only, as Shaheen Sports Lalpora won the finals of the 1st edition of the Indian Army's Kilo North Kashmir Premier League against NCC Narbal XI.

In a pulsating final held infront of an ecstatic crowd, Shaheen Sports Lalpora won the toss and decided to bat first. Despite losing early wickets, the Lolabians found a way via a feiry 71 off 46 balls by Sheikh Junaid and a 46 & 29(13) by Raja Tanveer and Shahid Mir respectively to help Shaheens put up the first 200 infront of a euphoric home crowd.

Needing 202 runs in their 20 overs, Narbal lost Waseem Kachur early before Saqib Pandiya and Abid Nabi steadied the ship before losing Pandiya. Narbals captain, Mehraj Amin played a hero's innings of 64 of just 27 balls, ably supported by Aabid Nabi's 50. However, Mir Tahir's spell of 4 overs for just 15 runs dealt a heavy blow to Narbal's quest. They finished 8 runs short to hand Shaheen Sports Lalpora a famous victory.

The award presentation ceremony began with the felicitation of match officials and members of Chandigam Sports Club, Shaukat Dar, Shahnawaz Shah and Imitiaz Dar for their efforts in organising the event by SDM Sogam. Next up, Raja Tanveer was awarded the Orange Cap for being the tournament's highest run getter with 206 runs. Shehzad Lone, also from Shaheens was awarded the Purple Cap for taking 11 wickets. They recieved Rs 5000 each from Mr Owais Farooq Mir, DFO Kamraj Forest Division and Mr Zubair Gulbdin from GD Sports, Srinagar.
For his stupendous performances throughout the tournament Sheikh Junaid walked away with Rs 40,000 in prize for the Player of the Series and Man of the Match. He recieved his award from Sh Ghulam Jeelani Wani, SSP Kupwara and Ms Naira Rashid.
General Officer Commanding CIF(K) and DC Kupwara, Mr Shrikant Balasaheb Suse presented both teams with medals and cash prizes worth Rs 75,000 for runners-up and Rs 1,50,000 for the winners.

This tournament, a first of its kind which saw 98 teams from North Kashmir battle each other for glory, has been an epic treat for cricket fans across the Valley. Tournaments like these enable teams from remote places like Lolab to dream big and stamp their name on the cricketing map of Jammu & Kashmir, something Shaheen Sports Lalpora have done in a manner that Lolab will remember for a long time.
